News:
Takeo Lee Wong, “the gardener of 105th Street,” has fought his landlord for years over Wong’s attempts to build a bustling garden. After the landlord ripped the plants out 2 summers ago, he has brought it back this summer “thicker than ever.” “I decided I’m not going to sit here and let someone tell me how to run my life and ruin the mother garden that propagates the plants for the rest of the block.” (NY Times)
Julian Kurita, a sushi chef who killed his father with a sushi knife in their 87th Street apartment in 2010, was sentenced to 15 years to life, the shortest sentence allowed by law. (NY Post)
Ken Biberaj, an executive at the Russian Tea Room, has already raised $130,000 in a race to represent the Upper West Side in the City Council. That’s the maximum amount allowed to qualify for matching funds. There are also 3 other candidates in the race. (NY Times)
The New York Observer expects banks to take the city’s new Upper West Side zoning law to the courts, and the magazine hopes that it will be overturned. (Observer)
I hope Ken wins the race. It’s time for some new blood in politics. The baby boomers have been running the show for too long and it def shows. Time for some long term strategic planning. Not passing one-offs every year to close the budget deficit or giving out raises to everyone to buy votes.
