We had heard that the Upper West Side was getting a new Chipotle, and that it would likely be going into the old Nëo Sushi spot on Broadway between 82nd and 83rd. But now we’ve gotten word that Chipotle is actually opening two new restaurants in the neighborhood. Jeffrey Roseman, a VP at real estate broker Newmark Knight Frank Retail tweeted today that the Mexican chain has leased new spots at 83rd and Broadway, as well as 91st and Broadway.
Chipotle continues its meteoric NYC expansion, we are pleased to announce 3 new leases, 82&bwy, 91&bwy and in tribecca at greenwich&murray..

We emailed him for more info, but haven’t heard back. We also haven’t heard back from Chipotle.

Disgusting.
OH MY! WHAT EXCITEMENT! WHAT A GREAT TIME TO BE AN UPPER WEST SIDER………..NOT!!!!!!
Why does the default expansion for every retail/fast-food/pseudo-pastry company in New York City now have to be “military occupation” level? Roseman says ‘meteoric NYC expansion’ like it’s necessary to completely Starbuck every block in order to be a chain. It’s like, total domination or don’t bother stepping up to the plate. So two Chipotles go up until one does better than the other. Then the weaker one gets shelled and sits as a gaping hole in a renovated storefront where a bodega once was, or a grocery store, or a restaurant.
It’s not Texan, it’s not Mexican, it’s some weird Frankenstein’ed blend of both, and certainly doesn’t require two locations in the same neighborhood.
You want authentic Mexican, why not help a local business and go to “The Great Burrito” instead? Cheaper, better, more edible, fantastic family service.
Good call. Great Burrito is actually pretty great.
Couldn’t have said it better Phil. I concur. I it is extremely sad that NYC is looking more and more like any other town in the US. That our Bodegas and local restaurants are being pushed aside by chains; and frankly, American excess. Why two? Why can’t it be enough with one? Of course walking ten blocks is just too much!
Except for McDonald’s, which reduced their UWS footprint two years ago, there really are no ‘fast food’ restaurants on the UWS. At least Chipotles focuses on serving quality food. No Pink Slim found there. Also, it is not like anyone was fighting for the real estate they are about to occupy, those two spaces have been empty for years.
THERE IT IS…….THE LIBERAL EXPLANATION
but when??????!!!!!!!!!!
