PHOTO OF THE DAY: LINCOLN CENTER’S NEW LEADING LADY

hippo2

Danish artist Bjørn Okholm Skaarup created the 15-foot-tall bronze “Hippo Ballerina” now standing in Dante Park at 64th and Broadway, across from Lincoln Center. It’s apparently modeled on Degas’ Little Dancer Aged Fourteen.

Thanks to Harriet Flehinger for the photo.

According to Dance Magazine, it’s only through July 31, 2017. Too bad, I think it’s a great addition to the neighborhood.

Unless this is a hint at how many Americans are obese, I don’t see the point to this bronze Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man. I prefer the whimsical bronze figures by Tom Otterness that are at the 14th street subway station.

To me it looks like Henrietta from the New Zoo Revue (kids’ tv show from the 70s): https://ixquick-proxy.com/do/spg/show_picture.pl?l=english&rais=1&oiu=https%3A%2F%2Fi.ytimg.com%2Fvi%2FT747ecbhzMg%2Fhqdefault.jpg&sp=60808a9f87680bf19ea7489f657a64b2

If we’re going large, a Botero would be nicer.

But Botero is probably MUCH too pricey for the Public Art Fund budget.
It will be on display until July of this year, according to the plaque on the base, for those of you who asked

Looks to be a takeoff as well from Disney’s FANTASIA.

I doubt if the dancers across the street at NY City Ballet love this. I do not. Truly disgusting.

I think it is cute. Doesn’t seem to rise to the level of disgusting or offensive, which seems a bit strong, I wouldn’t think, though I can clearly see that many would dislike it.

Wow, how I miss some of Denmark; which has an immigration crisis c.f. how [my] U.S.A.; which I was ‘kidnapped to’; has had since @ 1957. I could write some of this in the Danish language…Oh dear, I prefer “Willian” the hippo of the MET.. n.b. Grooks poems. I’ve sculpted ! What happened to The Big Apple Circus, after all ? &, to City Opera. Now, suffer in 2 slums; inc. re some of social work, some of gov’t; &, NOISE pollutions; &, UGLY-nesses. n.b. the Danish Royal Ballet. Tusind Tak/tack. [oops, my spelling]. Is Skaarup a town in Denmark ? Go’ ma’.

I think it is cool, but for some reason it really bothers me that it is looking away from the street.

Why are people so concerned about a piece of art with everything that’s going on in this city, and the world, right now? What is it that’s so special about the UWS that this shouldn’t be here? If you don’t like it then don’t look at it. :/
