Wonder what will happen with the Food Emporium at 90 st/Broadway. It was bought by AF Norwich LLC, no one seems to know who they are. Someone here seemed sure it will be Anytime Fitness, didn’t give the source of this info.
Is it me, or are there a lot more helicopters flying over the neighborhood recently? It’s been very loud!
I called 311 to register a complaint. I was very specific about my complaint, including the harms being caused.
In reply I received an email stating:
Request Type: Noise – Helicopter
Details: Other
Your Service Request was closed.
“The New York City Economic Development Corporation determined that the helicopter tour operator was operating within the limits of the New York City Helicopter Sightseeing Plan which establishes specific routing for tour flights.”
Please notice that my original complaint details are completely ignored.
I have always been a bit blase about the whole issue of tourist helicopters but over the New Years holiday I changed my tune a bit.
While walking in Hudson River Park my wife and I consistently counted six tourist helicopters in the airspace between 59th street and the 79th street boat basin over the Hudson river. Three were heading uptown on the NY side and three heading down closer to NJ. Six helicopters in a single square mile (approximately) is a bit ridiculous.
Perhaps a total ban isn’t necessary but additional regulation is probably warranted.
My apartment looks out over the Hudson River(upper 60s). Recently and during the Holidays, especially early evening and at night, helicopters are flying by, mostly but not exclusively up-river, in a non-stop parade, sometimes 1 per minute. There has been an huge and noticeable increase in helicopter activity heading up the Hudson.
Totally agree. Had the same experience trying to enjoy the Hudson River Park over the holidays. As you said, the nonstop parade of helicopters was extremely noticeable and comes close to ruining the tranquility on the ground.
Even though I shopped there often, I thought I’d be able to work around the loss of the Food Emporium with relative ease. I’m surprised at how wrong I was. Barzini’s is fine for certain things, but Key Food is just awful and Gristede’s produce, meat and chicken are simply frightening to look at. I keep a well stocked kitchen and do shop quite a bit at Trader Joe’s, Fairway and Westside Market, but we really could use a good supermarket in the area, although I know we aren’t going to get one.
I’m noticing that the citibike stands in the 70s are often barren, particularly, 72/68 and cpw, columbus 71/72 (the whole block), 74th and Columbus, 73rd and Amsterdam.
Is this a raging success which calls for more stations (the UWS/UES deployment is not as dense as the original deployments to the south) or is it something else?
BTW, anyone have any stats on the predicted dire increase in injuries and fatalities due to UWS citibikes?
Injuries and fatalities are down, but it sounds like the incidence of bicycle theft is waaaaaaaaay up.
