CHRISTMAS TREE FIRE BURNS CARS ON 79TH STREET

A fire that started in some Christmas trees left on the sidewalk in front of 125 West 79th street burned two cars that were parked there, neighbors said. The fire occurred  around 1 a.m. Tuesday, according to Bryan O’Connell, who sent in the photo above. “Firefighters had things under control within minutes.”

One car was removed, but the other one was still there on Wednesday, wrote our tipster Jackie, who sent in the photo below.

“Still smells like char. Bizarre. Asked a different door man he said it’s been there since Monday but he has no idea what happened.”

Just a couple of weeks ago, another burned car was spotted at the corner of 84th street and West End Avenue — the victim of a “mechanical failure.”

We updated this story Thursday morning based on new information.

Telling that there is increased dangers on the sidewalks recently. A couple of weeks ago I came out to my car which was parked under a scaffolding during building construction, to find that construction material had crashed through my rear windshield. Contractor did pay for repair and cleaned-up, but imagine if that had been a person standing below.

I was told by guy that owns the deli across the street that a cigarette butt caught a Christmas tree on fire next to the cars and spread to the cars. Luckily, the cars gas tank didn’t explode.
