David Thalberg enacts a particularly dramatic moment from his story, which was about an adventure in Upper West Side real estate.

West Side Rag’s first-ever storytelling night was held at Gastronomie 491 on Feb. 28. It featured seven true tales from Upper West Siders about the neighborhood — from stories of youthful debauchery to public embarrassments and the bonds that unite neighbors and roommates.

We’re planning on holding another event in the next month or so, and plan to release details about that in a week or so. In the meantime, enjoy the stories below!

A chance encounter with a hawk…

An actress is recognized on a bus…

An awkward conversation with the rabbi’s wife…

The man across the courtyard…

A dream that became all too real…

“Batman” and the roof parties…

A brave walk to school in the “bad old days”…

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate. A wonderful way to connect with other UWS-ers. Both the storytellers and the audience seemed to be having a great time.
