August 31, 2011 Weather: Partly Cloudy, High of 85 Degrees.

News:
Jillian Recchi, one of the women who was hit by a speeding black Lexus on Thursday night at 70th Street and Broadway, is still in a coma. The other woman, Dana Laven, was also seriously injured and just started to walk again on Monday. The two mothers are both in their 40s. The Lexus, which was supposedly traveling 60 mph up Broadway before slamming into the women — so hard it knocked one of the women literally out of her boots and socks — sped away after the crash. Police apparently don’t have surveillance video or a solid witness in the case. If you saw anything, call 1-800-577-TIPS. (NY Daily News)

Protesters with “Howling for Justice” gathered in Central Park yesterday to mobilize against wolf hunting in Idaho and other western states. The people of Idaho were perplexed. (Howling for Justice and the Idaho Statesman)

Fashion Week is still a month away, but police have already closed streets and forbidden parking around Lincoln Center. (DNAinfo)

The Beacon School, a well-regarded public high school at 227 West 61st Street, will be moving into a new building on West 44th Street because of overcrowding. (DNAinfo)

Please limit comments to 150 words and keep them civil and relevant to the article at hand. Comments are closed after six days. Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
