It took about a year from when the Gourmet Garage on Broadway between 96th and 97th Street closed, but a new 7-Eleven has finally taken its place. And it looks like the Upper West Side will continue adding the corporate convenience stores for many months, if not years, to come. As we reported a few months ago, 7-Eleven is also on its way to the corner of 106th and Broadway. That one will be the neighborhood’s fourth.
And to think, just three years ago we didn’t have a single 7-Eleven. How did the neighborhood survive?
That’s not the only chain that’s expanding. A new Chipotle is under construction on Broadway between 82nd and 83rd, in the former home of Nëo Sushi. We had first heard about the restaurant in March, but there hadn’t been any activity at the site for many months.
Thanks to Sarah and Ken for the tips, and to Sarah for the 7-Eleven photo.

Let’s hope Big Nick’s stays open.
And with PinkBerry soon to open on Broadway (93/94), does anyone have news on what may be opening in the old Payless Shoes (next to Radio Shack) across the street? Moving very slowly, with no permits up, but have seen workers in and out.
I don’t. I saw guys working the other day and asked but they kind of gave me a blank stare and said they don’t know.
For what it’s worth there was not work done to the inside at all.
