Multiple people were injured after a fire broke out Wednesday afternoon in a residential building on the Upper West Side, an FDNY spokesperson confirmed to West Side Rag.
The flames ignited around 3:45 p.m. on the sixth floor of a New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) building at 154 West 84th Street, between Amsterdam and Columbus avenues, FDNY reported.
The fire was brought under control by 4:15 p.m., but four civilians were injured in the process, FDNY said. All four of them were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries was all the FDNY specified.
“The building smells to high heavens and the staircase are filled from debris,” Sylvia Torres, a resident of the building told West Side Rag. “I believe the apartment windows were broken where the fire took place, and they have lost most of everything material.”
While it is not confirmed, two people from the building told the Rag that the family who lives in the apartment where the fire broke out lost their dog Lola in the blaze.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.

I live at this residence and unfortunately the senior dog that lived in the apartment alongside the family was a casualty. Lola was a fierce and feisty senior dog and she will be missed.
Rest in peace, Lola, I’m sure you were a very good girl.
Lola was the spiciest senior and the best companion to Viv, she fought to get Lola out, my heart breaks for her and family. We all are neighbors that became a family, so we all are feeling the loss Anna ✨🙏🏼✨
So horrible, and poor Lola!!! Very heartbreaking, and I hope those displaced find a new new place soon. No word on what started the fire?
Another ion battery fire? How many is that now. 150 plus? Our City MUST remove
these bikes from our city immediately
What is taking so long?
Suggestion to you, “names”. Don’t post things that are not true. Thanks.
Did anyone say the cause was an ION battery? I thought the cause was still under investigation.
That said, even if this tragedy had nothing to do with an ION battery, there should still be more serious limits placed on them. The new legislation mostly has to to with stopping manufacturers of motorized vehicles from using refurbished batteries. I’m not confident that this will put an end to that practice by those who care more about money than safety. And, since even new batteries can start massive fires if they aren’t charged correctly, buildings should ban them from apartments. A number of buildings have already done this but it should be a total ban based on new laws.
Aren’t you way off topic? Nobody said anything about a battery causing this!
Yes someone posted that and that was not the case. That is my sister apartment they have a bike and it’s not electric.
This had nothing to do with Ion battery, it was an electrical problem with the bldg
I am so sorry for all of the residents, and the tragic loss of Lola.
I have a beige leather sofa bed, a pale green chaise, and a queen bed with headboard and frame if anyone here needs it…
I also have a bed frame I was looking to donate and would be happy to give it to them if that would be helpful. Does anyone know if there’s a GoFundMe page or anything similar set up for them?
Her Niece is making a gofundme. I’ll post the link once it’s created.
Heartbreaking situation and RIP Lola
I have a sleepy sofa, excellent condition. I am in the area of UWS. Just needs the be picked up.
Hope the City is ensuring decent hotel in Manhattan for any residents whose apartments were impacted.
Hope Council Member Brewer is prioritizing actual West Side residents
Is the city responsible for providing accommodations? Just curious. The roof partially collapsed in my building approx 20 years ago and I was able to stay with a friend, but the best offer my neighbors got (from the Red Cross) was a hotel in the Bronx.
I personally do not know how this works but it seems to me that if the City is housing recently arrived migrants in hotels in Manhattan, then the City should be providing Manhattan hotel lodging for these NYCHA tenants.
I agree! I just hope if the city does find housing for them that it’s in this area and near where their kids are going to school.
I feel so bad about Lola. I hope she did not suffer. What a tragic loss.
