Barbie Steps From Cleaners’ Window to Limelight

I always enjoy the changing window displays at Apthorp Cleaners on Amsterdam Avenue (78th and 79th). Owners Debra and Joel Kravet never disappoint with their Barbie doll dioramas. Currently Barbie and Ken are featured at this Upper West Side business in anticipation of the film premiere of “Barbie” on July 21.

Apthorp Cleaners was originally located in the famed Apthorp Building, from which it took its name.

I love their dioramas! So clever, often very timely, and always bringing a smile.

Could we perhaps get a little more back story on the window? Who changes the display…and when? (I live on that block and have never witnessed the window remodel!?) Where do they store all the props? How many dolls do they have? Is this the work of one person or a team? I am a big fan and also a customer. And mostly- thank you for bringing a little more color and curiosity to the neighborhood!

You can always go into the store and ask them these questions in person. I’m sure they’d be happy to tell you.

I love these windows! My favorite so far was the passover seder one. Hysterical. 🤗

I’d love to know more about their Barbie collection—origins, number of dolls, where they get the clothes from.

I have been enjoying their windows for so many years and I would like to take the time to thank both Debra and Joel Kravet for never disappointing us with their Barbie doll dioramas. I also have wondered about all of the back stories and questions that “Erica’ raised but when I pass by they seem to be busy with their work, so I feel I will be interrupting their flow. Maybe one day I will stop in….thank you for all the years!
