It’s going to be a rough winter for restaurants, given the indoor dining shutdown and the difficulties of running an outdoor operation when temperatures drop. Some spots have already decided to close their doors for the time being. Now others have joined them.
West Side Restaurant, the classic spot at 69th and Broadway where Lady Gaga once waitressed, has shut its doors for now with a sign on the door saying “closed until further notice.” No one was answering the phone. Hopefully it’s just for a short period. We had heard earlier this year that they might close, but a waiter told us it was “fake news.” Thanks to Jordan for the tip.
Owl’s Tail at 215 West 75th Street is “hibernating” for January, according to the restaurant’s Instagram page. Thanks to Keith for the tip.
I walked by PJ Clarke’s on Wednesday and there was a in the window saying they were closed for the rest of the year, but not giving an opening date. From their website it looks like all their locations are closed.
The west side restaurant is a permanent closure.
Loved West Side Restaurant. A damn shame if they don’t survive.
Wish I could say the same. Rude management, bad food and way-too-high prices. Total rip-off.
Some portion of stimulus funds should be earmarked for these situations. Pay unemployment to all, including the owners, pay the restaurants’s rent.
Why are we sending money to people who haven’t lost income when this is where it should be sent?
That new place The Upside has covered its windows with paper and says closed until further notice. They were open for a month maybe.
Yeah, they are really just a craft beer and cocktail place, so all their current revenue would come from outdoor drinking, which is obviously not sustainable throughout the winter.
I know Earth Cafe (Broadway and 97th) closed several months ago, but yesterday when I walked by there were people inside. It wasn’t clear whether they were cleaning/packing things up, or possibly preparing for something new. Probably the former given the state of things, but it would be great if it were the latter!
Shun Lee on West 65 is open again!
Once again, Saiguettte has postponed its re-opening. According to Yelp, it’s now scheduled to reopen February 1st.
Thank you for the Saiguette update! There are really missed.
The paper is off the windows at the former TD Bank on the SE corner of 86th & Columbus, and some clean-out work appeared to be going on inside. It’s a huge space, formerly The Gap,on a very busy corner and I’m curious about what may go in there. Could retail rents be going down?
West Side Restaurant- Only place I knew of that had Taylor Ham and eggs (Taylor Pork Roll) as a side.
I also used to get coffee to go & a toasted hot butter Kaiser roll to dunk, on my way to work at my ABC Master Control job in the middle of the night… and once encountered a not very garrulous Jimmy Breslin there…
They’ll be missed, at least by me… I’ve spent a lot of time in multiple diners in my life. Their numbers have gradually thinned through the years but now suddenly they’re an endangered species.
Yet another collateral victim of covid.
To me, this is no NYC without diners. I’m heartbroken.
Every Democratic politician in town loves this. Out with private enterprise. In with government
Big fan of owls tail. Staff is friendly. Food and drinks are tasty!
