La Maternelle is a bilingual preschool set to open this April at 80 Riverside Boulevard, between 63rd and 64th Streets. The new French and English school will be open year-round, with a summer session in July and August, and it accepts children from 3 months to 5 years old. The school is open from Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Owners Johanne Emir and Rose Hanson have experience running other schools, including Oui Oui Preschool in Pelham, Westchester. Rose also runs Les Petits Sourires on West 97th Street.

La Maternelle is a true immersion program for Infants and Toddlers: the staff is French or speaks French, and will speak only French to the children. English will be introduced to Preschoolers (from 2 to 5 years old) but French will still be the major component. Children receive a comprehensive education with a different enrichment program each day, from yoga to soccer, music, French drama and more!

To learn more, see the school’s website at lamaternellenyc.com or call (212) 957-1234 for a tour.

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
