This spring Bard Graduate Center is partnering with Textile Arts Center to run monthly hands-on workshops for adults and kids that respond to our two exhibitions, Fabricating Power with Balinese Textiles and The Codex and Crafts in Late Antiquity. Kids will learn about backstrap weaving, embroidery, bookbinding, and beading. In the first workshop, Warp Painted Wall Hangings, on March 24, 11am to 2pm, participants will work collaboratively to create a hand-woven wall hanging on a loom, while experimenting with painting on the warp, a technique inspired by ikat—fabric made using an Indonesian decorative technique in which warp or weft threads, or both, are tie-dyed before weaving.
