Click here to learn more about Adult Workshops. This spring Bard Graduate Center is partnering with Textile Arts Center to run monthly hands-on workshops for adults and kids that respond to our two exhibitions, Fabricating Power with Balinese Textiles and The Codex and Crafts in Late Antiquity. Kids will learn about backstrap weaving, embroidery, bookbinding, and beading. In the first workshop, Warp Painted Wall Hangings, on March 24, 11am to 2pm, participants will work collaboratively to create a hand-woven wall hanging on a loom, while experimenting with painting on the warp, a technique inspired by ikat—fabric made using an Indonesian decorative technique in which warp or weft threads, or both, are tie-dyed before weaving.

For more information and to register click here or email public.programs@bgc.bard.edu. Bard Graduate Center is located at 18 West 86th Street, New York City.

Textile Arts Center is a NYC-based resource facility dedicated to raising awareness and understanding of textiles through creative educational programs for children and adults. Textile Arts Center aspires to unite the textile community and advocate for the handmade by providing accessible, skills-based classes that reinvigorate engagement with traditional crafts. Techniques like weaving, sewing, and dyeing are practical, connective, and process-driven—common denominators for designers, artists, and creative practitioners around the world.

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
