This summer’s Shakespeare in the Park shows will be Julius Caesar and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the Public Theater announced on Tuesday.
Julius Caesar will run from May 23 until June 18 and feature Corey Stoll and Elizabeth Marvel (at left), two cast members from the Netflix series House of Cards. Other notable cast members include Tony winner Nikki James and Stephen Adly Guirgis, a Pulitzer-Prize-winning playwright (and longtime Upper West Sider). The play has particular resonance this year, because it involves “principled, idealistic people who are worried that their Democracy is going to be destroyed by a charismatic demagogic leader who is threatening to become a dictator,” director Oskar Eustis explained in a video about the season.
The comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be directed by Lear deBoseenet and will run from July 11 through August 13.
The shows are free, and you can get tickets by waiting in line or entering an online lottery.
As Emily might say,
“Tell all the Truth but tell it slant —
Success in Circuit lies
Too bright for our infirm Delight
The Truth’s superb surprise
“As Lightning to the Children eased
With explanation kind
The Truth must dazzle gradually
Or every man be blind —”
Let’s have more slant in art than this. Less bluntness like that employed by the man being pointed to.
The picture you claim is of Elizabeth Marvel is a picture of another wonderful actress named Tina Benko. They both have blonde hair and blue eyes.
Thanks. I was wondering about that picture – certainly isn’t Elizabeth Marvel.
That is definitely Tina Benko (a college classmate of mine.) And Corey Stoll is a native Upper West Sider! His parents still live in the West 90s.
