Shortly before the inauguration began on Friday, a plane flew up and down the Hudson River, proclaiming “We Outnumber Him! Resist!”
Several people snapped photos from their windows, like the one above by Bernard Harcourt.

Gothamist found a woman in Seattle who took credit for the sign and told them “love letter from the United States to New York”. She sent the following explanation:
We chose this message because Americans are currently debating whether we should focus on the economic concerns of whites who feel marginalized by economic and social changes that favor diversity or the ongoing struggle against systemic discrimination faced by women, people of color, LGBTQ folk, and others. This is a false choice and is keeping us distracted and divided while Trump and his fellow global elites consolidate their power. We need to realize that a nation that values some people above others – be that whites above people of color, men above women, or rich above working class – can never be truly free. It is only when every human being is represented and cherished equally in policy, economics, and social dynamics that we will have achieved the “more perfect union” our Constitution aspires to. “We outnumber him!” is a battle cry for that more perfect union.
Hope to see many of these readers at the March tomorrow whether in DC or here in the City, Philly, Chicago, Miami, LA. We must show this administration that women (and our men & children) are entitled to our own reproductive rights. GOP does not own us or our bodies. WE OUT NUMBER THEM – RESIST!!
I disagree with something therefore the other side is wrong.
Way to be inclusive liberals.
Not sure what you are trying to say.
Do you suggest that only liberals have opinions and feel that the “other side” is sometimes wrong on issues?
Are you suggesting that liberals should not express their differences while conservatives should be free to do so?
Or are you just taking a cheap potshot that demonstrates a remarkable lack of substance?
Re: “Way to be inclusive liberals.”
INCREDIBLE !
Be “Inclusive” to an administration AND its base that is EXCLUSIVE to everyone but themselves !
That is like dismissing a deadly Melanoma as just-another-birthmark.
And the German Jews in the mid-1930’s thought:
1. Oh, Hitler’s not so bad;
2. maybe he’ll go away…
3. and besides, WE are Germans, too !
Come on!!! Do we really have to go there?? This isn’t Germany in the 30’s.
Enough with the hysteria people. I despise the guy too but you are not helping with that.
Dissent is patriotic!
Amen!!!!!
Dems adding to the carbon footprint to get their “point” across. Very bad, hypocritical even.
That’s the best you can do?
Aw come on Scottie – I guess the Keystone Pipeline (among others) that Tweety & the GOP are trying to ram down our throats has zero carbon footprint. FAKE NEWS!
Re: “Dems adding to the carbon footprint to get their “point” across.”
REALLY??
The aircraft in the photo is probably a Luscombe or TaylorCraft, both flying-antiques from the 1930’s and both powered by single engines producing less than 200 horse-power, and therefore minimal carbon emissions.
Probably much less than the emissions of
most of today’s cars and pickup trucks.
And certainly MUCH LESS than someone’s private 757 airliner, with that huge “T” on its vertical stabilizer, that carried him to all his rallies.
I voted for “him.” Though greatly outnumbered in my Election District, 800-5 or something like that.
My view is: believe at most 10% of what anyone running for office says; campaigning is a lot different from governing; and what you’ve SEEN is what you’re gonna get. Many of us grew up around “him” in the ’70s and ’80s, and frankly I’m not that worried. I voted for him because I believe he can do the two things I thought the other candidate couldn’t: (1) keep my family safer from terrorist attacks and (2) create jobs for all Americans, especially poor Americans.
Get over yourselves and look forward rather than give in to your specious fears.
Well said!!!
Specious fears, Howard? In an average year, more americans die from lightening strikes than they do from terrorism (I assume you’re talking about islamic terrorism and not the run of the mill gun violence that grips all major american cities). If islamic terrorism is what you think is threatening your family, you might want to refresh your list to include heart disease, malignant neoplasms, lower respiratory disease, alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, the flu, liver disease, hypertension, parkinson’s. Obamacare sure would come in handy if one of these ACTUAL threats to your wellbeing cropped up.
TELL US:
How can he save you from terrorist attacks if he doesn’t read security briefings? How can he have a plan to protect us if he thinks little of the intelligence he receives?
How can he create jobs when his experience is in business, and his purported millions are gotten by swindling contractors left and right and declaring bankruptcy? He shills bad steaks on skymall for god’s sake. He ran a sham university. You’ve got funny ideas about expertise.
His tweets show him for the cretin he is: vain, so so vain, and focused on everything that doesn’t matter.
So go ahead. I for one won’t be Trump’s chump…or Putin’s putz for that matter.
The fears, unfortunately, are real!
You are the one who needs to get over yourself and wake up! This ” President” is clueless and a real danger for us and everything this country stands for.
For the good of us all let’s hope you don’t have to regret your vote.
I voted for him too Howard.
I voted for Trump for all of the good reasons while accepting the bad ones too. The math in that equation was overwhelmingly simple.
Good to see another Trump supporter who’s not afraid of being hated against by ones neighbors.
It was a simple vote for me, too, Miguel. Not voting at all was not an option for me — I feel it’s a duty as well as a right — and I thought Clinton’s hidden baggage and her ineffectiveness as a government servant didn’t garner my vote. It would have been a waste to vote for anyone else, nor do I think that the other candidates could do what I wanted done. My vote was simply a “hiring decision,” and I was willing to put up with all his crap.
Howard,
You really think that ….. boy are you ever in for a (DISAPPOINTING) surprise!!
You say you grew up around “him” in the 70’s and 80’s …. that’s exactly why I did NOT vote for him because I have watched him spout nothing but lies which is exactly how he got elected! Never have so many marched against a divisive President of the United States.
Why? What has he done to make you think he can create new jobs and keep you safer? Is it dodging the draft or selling steaks and ties? I’d look forward if he gave me a reason to.
Your enthusiasm is encouraging. There were folks before Kristallnacht who thought the Nazi economic recovery policy would work. Similarly, Herbert Hoover’s advisors had very similar opinions of how to save the US economy. While their arithmetic was better than Paul Ryan’s, how did that turn out for the US, and for the world? Welcome to the RePocolypse!
The enthusiasm for President Obama before his election was similarly inflated, and his detractors were similarly doomsday-minded. Neither turned it to be as extreme as anticipated. I trust our country’s people.
I will keep your comment in the context of your self description: “I was a quasi-rich kid with a still-big ego today and a questionable intellect”. Thanks for the background.
Howard I am with you. I know over 100 folks that voted for him in the city. He won the majority of the states, only the costal states care for the Liberal agenda. To me most of these folks are talking about over throwing the government, good luck with that.
He lost the popular vote by almost three million votes. His electoral college margin was in the bottom 25% of all the time. He’s starting his term with disapproval ratings hovering around 50%. Don’t kid yourself; he was not the choice of the majority of the people by any metric.
“To me most of these folks are talking about over throwing the government, good luck with that.” – John
John, that assessment in your mind, I don’t expect you to respond with reason.
no need to be concerned with the poor Americans – they’ll all be dead in two years because they have no affordable health care
Howard Freeman – you may have just become my favorite person on the Upper West Side. Thank you. Sincerely, a woman who voted for Trump.
Thanks.
Mr Freeman: how strange and foolish that anyone could believe anything Donald Trump says. You really think he cares about getting jobs for people?? He was a rich kid with a big ego and no intellect. He wants to get richer and he has no interest in helping you or anyone outside his family. He is exactly like a third world dictator with a family of princelings to do his bidding. Sadly, you will find out how much damage he does to our country. He has already shamed us in so many ways. Will his tax returns convince you of his thievery? You’ll never see them so dream on….but you and others like you need to educate yourself…reality is important and Donald Trump has lied, cheated, insulted, and degraded everything. Good luck to you….you’ll need it. We all sincerely wish that he will be impeached within the year.
I was a quasi-rich kid with a still-big ego today and a questionable intellect, yet I care about getting people jobs. I’ve worked in the nonprofit space for 20 years, currently helping at-risk teens.
Problem with Hillary is that, as I wrote, she showed little to no track record to get things done.
I agree with the other replier that “get over yourselves” is rude; I regret that and apologize.
Howard, don’t you dare tell me to get over myself. I am too old to go back to the insanity of dealing with private insurance companies. Medicare is the only healthcare insurance that qualifies as what we used to think “businesslike” meant. Before you tell your elders that their fear of losing this is specious, look it up.
I voted… Against “her”! And nothing says “love trumps hate” more than the assaults and rioting that have taken place at these “protests”. Imagine if these protesters spent a fraction of the time actually helping the people they claim to be fighting and caring for? Hypocrites to the max wasting time and energy on something that does just about nothing.
Resistance to Obama was also praised as democratic.
Hillary won the presidency by over 2M votes which we all know. She did not lose to Trump.
The Electoral College derailed her.
NPR had a segment last week asking listeners what they thought Obama should turn his attention and energies to now that he is a private citizen and a very powerful one at that. It seems to me that he should marshall forces to eliminate the Electoral College and prevent another travesty like this (and Al Gore’s ) from ever being able to happen again. He has four years ahead of him to make this happen and assure us we won’t have eight years of this despicable Neanderthal as President of these United States. Some groups have already been formed but need a leader to unite them. Barack would certainly be the man to unite AND lead them.
If you take all the illegal alien votes out of the equation I doubt that Hillary won the popular vote.
Karen – are you presenting “alternative facts”?
And your evidence for that specious claim? No where in sight. How many times should Trump’s lies be debunked before his supporters get the message?
https://www.politifact.com/punditfact/statements/2016/nov/18/blog-posting/no-3-million-undocumented-immigrants-did-not-vote-/
Howard, whyshould anyone get over themselves? If you think the guy will help a lot of poor people get jobs, then hold him to it.. It would be nice if those who endorsed him would stop following behind him to dab at his verbal dribbles and tweets and helped him stick to the few things he said he could do better than anyone else ever. Curious how you defend his lowering standards on environmental protections. He can do that well, but do YOU think that’s good? Just curious. Thanks.
Phoebe, I was rude to say “get over yourselves.” I apologize for that.
On an unrelated note, I WAS scratching my head at Trump’s elimination of federal transit monies; am curious to know how much of the MTA’s budget if any gets affected. This would adversely affect the poor urbanites I feel I stand up for.
You think you stand up for “poor urbanites” and you voted for Trump??!!
Seriously Howard are you just doing schtick here or something?? Just wait until you see how his policies, from repealing ACA, DeVos in charge of Ed, Sessions as AG, etc. are going to effect these people…just wait.
If you truly thought you stood for these folks you are going to be horrified.
Don’t even get me started on the environment…
I’m thrilled that so many New Yorkers and people from nearby communities were out there in Manhattan today, while many others surely were in Washington. A wonderful day, with protests reported in more than 660 cities and towns in the U.S. and in at least 32 other countries.
Great picture and comment. There are many problems that we face and all are important. We all do not have to choose only one problem. If we all picked what matters to us personally and commit to that movement then all problems will be covered. We should not let the powers that be detate that we pick only one.
Democracy cannot be practiced only one day every four years. It must be practiced every day.
“We outnumber him”?? Well of course you do, he’s only one person, he’s kids outnumber him. Makes zero sense.
I’m glad about the protests. Between the Obama support since 2008, the Bernie phenomenon, the Trump one, and now the anti-Trump one, the electorate is coming alive. Especially among the younger generation.
Stand Up! Be Heard! And they will listen.
This is democracy at its best. Don’t stop pushing back. The Trumpster has a narrow vision of equality for all. For all who are white, rich, male educated and don’t need to pay taxes. But his speeches will always contradict his motivation. He is a master manipulator salesman. Just listen how he spins all the negative ideas he puts out there, and when confronted he denies everything. Deny, deny, deny is his motto and then blames the other guy or media. Hello, put the cool aide down. Wake up! Peacefully be bold.
