Two highly anticipated restaurants are getting closer to opening, but one will be serving customers much sooner than the other.
Maison Kayser, a bakery and restaurant, is set to open on Thursday on the corner of 76th street and Broadway, the former home of Fratelli La Bufala and Niko’s Greek restaurant before that. The space looks bright, with big windows facing 76th and Broadway. Maison Kayser is known for great breads, through its restaurant food is pretty pricey. Here’s the menu from the East side spot.
Italian restaurant Parm is moving into the former home of Lansky’s on Columbus between 70th and 71st. We’ve been getting lots of questions on when the space will open since we first heard about it in February. Construction has begun and workers were in there today, but it doesn’t sound like they’ll be opening their doors until next year. Co-owner Jeff Zalaznick was speaking at Cornell recently and apparently told students that the Upper West Side location and others in the city will be opening in 2015.
Looking at Maison Kayser prices,I don’t think Viand cafe has to worry about competition. Yikes that’s expensive stuff.
Ditto what UWS-er said. Also, it should be noted that Viand is quite expensive for diner food – its prices for sandwiches and salads ($15 or so) are pretty much identical to what Maison Kayser charges.
Obviously you’ll get more food at Viand and better quality at MK, but the check will be about the same.
Uh, don’t think they’re trying to compete with diners.
Beisdes a restaurant they have a take out bakery, croissants, quiche, bread, etc,,, prices arent that exhorbitant and the olive bread is AMAZING $5 A LOAF
Maison Kayser was packed on Sunday night – I’m not sure if it was an opening party or something else.
Kayser, at Columbus Circle, is a busy, wonderful place with a very young, eager staff. it was there i discovered their baguettes. cheap—under $3. waaay better than Levain. i have since discovered one other good bakery but Kayser is as close to a Paris baguette as I’ve found.
Any tips from other baguette lovers for a source in this same area?
Have you ever heard of SilverMoon Bakery and Cafe ???
So what’s ONE OTHER GOOD BAKERY, Geoff?
Try Tiny Treats, new bakery at 616 Amsterdam – 90th Street.
(Owner or co-owner? was owner of former Georgia’s Bakery on Broadway & 89th)
Try Millefeuille bakery, between 77th & 76Th on Broadway.
Great baguette and best chocolate croissant in NY (and I am French!),
Agree. Likely the best patisserie in the area. Grandaisy Bakery also has great baguettes – and the best pizza around.
I don’t know who else will patronize this place for meals besides tourists who don’t know any better and the wealthy residents in the new high-priced buildings. All this plus more can be gotten for less just a few blocks further north. Selling baguettes alone doesn’t pay the rent.
I give this place 2 years at most.
Hate to burst your negative bubble, Wendy, but I think people WILL patronize this place, and not just “wealthy people from high-priced buildings” (who are clearly up to no good).
I personally live in Lincoln Towers (is that in your “high priced” category or no? I’d say no, right? Or are we on the borderline since it’s sort of turning over?) and plan to patronize it a lot – there is one near my office and the bread and pastries are excellent. So my feeling is that the people that will go there are simply people that appreciate good food.
But I guess it’s more fun to complain! Another nice place! There goes the neighborhood!
“Clearly up to no good” spending money! Well said.
Very funny.
The one at columbus circle seems to be doing just fine… in fact, its always packed on the weekends. Just another high quality, somewhat pricey brunch spot.
The East side site says they deliver. Mmmm … Wouldn’t mind having some cassoulet arrive at my door on a cold winter’s night. Yes, a little pricey, but if the quality is good it’ll be worth the few extra bucks.
The following from the LES ASSIETTES section of Maison Kayser’s menuu:
“Deux Oeufs Au Choix two eggs scrambled, sunny side up or soft boiled with tourte de meule $9.00”
Hmmm…9 bucks for 2 eggs? Guess it’s the “tourte de meule” that drives up the price.
“Jambon Fumé & Deux Oeufs Au Choix house-smoked ham & two eggs scrambled, sunny side up or soft boiled with tourte de meule
$14”
Hmmm… 14 bucks for ham-‘n’-eggs? But there’s that danged expensive tourte de meule again!
Hope these prices won’t hit you in your … assiette!
It’s not a greasy spoon diner.. You don’t patronize everyday just when you in the mood for the great ambiance and classy food ala France’
Walked by Maison Kayser on Sunday night, and they were handing out free baguettes out front. It was quite good, and definitely made me interested to try more (though I confess I was already looking forward to giving them a try). I hope that Mille Feuille and MK can coexist on the same block!
I hope they both can exist and thrive on the same block too.
They both add a nice neibhorhoody see and be seen atmosphere to the block.
And curmugeons, you get the same nice feel all for the price of a cup of coffee…
oh and don’t tell anyone – shhhh – they both are “chain stores’ well Mille Feuille has a total of 2 locations….
Maison in NY is the child of a very famous french eatery in Paris… Not like an Applebees…….It has quality roots..
On the East Side, MK does not have a liquor license. Will this be true of the West Side location?
I like Maison Kayser fine… but I am super excited to hear about Parm! I love the one on Mulberry St.
highly disappointed in maison kayser. the onion soup was served without the layer of cheese, sent back, brought back basically the same. the boeuf bourguignon was visibly overdone, service was amateurish & inexperienced. one would think that the owner would know how to roll out another “mason kayser”, wouldn’t one??? wrote an email, but never answered, which is typical – they know better than the customers, right??? why bother when there are so many other choices on the UWS. i’ve had my last baguette @ the Kayser.
I am so glad to see some good food coming to the UWS! Best bread ever. Yay turmeric bread!
Went to Maison Kayser today for a b’fast that coast $12.53. They came back with $7 for change. I asked where the rest of my change was and they said, “We don’t do change!” We round up or down. What’s up with this?? Is it legal? They don’t indicate this anywhere.
