A mother and father were stabbed early on Tuesday morning at 784 Columbus Avenue near 97th street, and their son is suspected of the crime, according to police. The father was pronounced dead and the mother was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital. ABC News lists her in stable condition, while CBS reported she was in critical condition.
“Officers were responding to a call of an assault inside an eighth floor apartment when they found a 71-year-old man with multiple stab wounds to the face and chest, police said. A 56-year-old woman was also found stabbed in the chest, police said.”
Update: A 27-year-old man named Anthony Powe has been charged with murder in the second degree and assault. He is accused of killing his father Darrington Powe, 71 and stabbing his mother Alicia Powe, 56.
Neighbors and relatives told the media that Anthony Powe was mentally ill. Cops had been called to the apartment 8 times since 2004 for domestic disputes.

I guess this was the reason for the 6AM helicopter wake-up we received this morning. Does anyone know if these were Police helicopters searching for a suspect or News helicopters? If they were police that’s understandable, but if they were News…6AM in a residential neighborhood to cover a stabbing = not cool…
Yet another example of Local (Tabloid) TV “News” Basic Philosophy: “IF IT BLEEDS, IT LEADS”.
In other words, as (make-believe) journalists, we spare no expense to bring you titillating pictures of homicides and auto crashes…even though none of these have any relevance to your life.
Of course you didn’t know the victims nor the drivers, but hey, this is how we get you to stay tuned in so that you won’t miss the next set of 5 commercials.
Ever notice how something that takes 3 to 5 minutes of air-time gets maybe an inch of print in the NY Times?
Media…WCBS…I was able to watch and hear at the same time
Haha Adam. Aren’t you used to noise living in NYC?
I’m pretty sure that the dead father and stabbed mom weren’t pissed about the helicopters are you friggin serious? wailing cop cars and ambulances would be ok? if it was your family i’m pretty sure you wouldn’t give a rats ass about the noise in your “residential neighborhood” no matter what time it was. what fucking planet do you live on? It’s NYC you dolt, last time I checked we weren’t residential anywhere…..
To all the people who apparently failed to read my comment before posting a reply (yes that’s you Doodle and some others).
Police helicopter, or any other noise would be perfectly acceptable in this situation (or fire or any emergency vehicle for that matter), as I stated in my original post. Yes C.H., even if responding to a false alarm because they are – EMERGENCY vehicles that keep us safe and even responding to false alarms is a necessity for them.
WCBS news helicopter, are not acceptable. clearly they either have too much air time that either ran out of things to say or can’t help but report about stabbings, (because g-d forbid a local station could do some quality in depth reporting).
While I do live in NYC and have heard sirens before. I should not have my children run into my room at 6AM scared out of their mind, for the sake of NEWS Helicopters.
So to simplify for all the people that apparently don’t like to actually read posts:
Noise from emergency responders to help wounded or capture bad guys = GOOD
Noise from News helicopters in residential neighborhood at 6AM to cover a stabbing = BAD
Adam-I grew up on the Upper West side since a very young child and maybe just maybe the sound of bullets back in the day was just a little bit scarier than helecopters hovering overhead at 6am. Maybe your children can be told that helecopters and such are not to be afraid of. Which I’m suprised they would be more afraid of helecopter noise than a fire siren ( maybe thinking there’s a fire in apt. or building)
And because it’s NYC, that precludes you from having a civilized conversation and instead engage in using filthy language and name calling?
Perhaps Adam’s comments could have been worded a bit better, but West Side Rag needs to do a better job of screening the language used in the comments that users are allowed to make and not post any garbage in the name of Free Speech.
Glad not gang-related or indicative of a related problem, though mental illness is likely the bigger problem anyway. While the helicopters were alarming, I am glad that they caught the suspect, no matter if it woke up the neighborhood.
Adam, I guess you would be saying the same thing if there were fire engine sirens at 6am and it’s ok if there was a real fire but not ok if it was a false alarm. You live in NYC. There is always some kind of noise at any time of day or night. Either way terrible news!
I find Adam’s noise comment ridiculous.
I think it’s OK for the noise to wake rent-stabilized tenants, but not market-rate tenants.
Cato hahahahaha !!
LOL
I 2nd your LOL!
If this young man, Anthony Powe was mentally ill, why was he not better supervised by his family? Meds; or a mental facility?
What a boring story. And the fact that once more residents are kept awake constantly by all the fire engines, St Luke’s ambulances, police helicopters, people from the suburbs screaming and fighting till 4am on the weekend.. When is there going to be some accountability for all this bull? What kind of ‘civilization’ are we turning into?
I read that the son worked the night shift at a local food store. Does anyone know what store?
You guys are all so concered about yourself and should be ashamed of yourself …. U all are really assholes.
