CAR SMASHES THROUGH TREE PLANTER ON BROADWAY IN MYSTERY CRASH

A car drove off the road and onto the sidewalk, smashed through a tree planter, and sailed toward Brooks Brothers on Broadway between 87th and 88th streets this weekend. But it’s not clear what happened beyond that. NYPD and FDNY had no details, so we figured we’d post the basic details and see if anyone else witnessed anything. Helen Rosenthal sent us the photo above on Saturday and said she was apparently the first person to call 311 about it (it’s not clear if the crash occurred late on Friday or on Saturday). Janet sent us the details below:

“I noticed Saturday morning on the west side of Broadway between 87th and 88th streets that a small tree had been knocked down and the iron grillwork around the treepit was completely mangled.  And there were tire marks on the sidewalk leading up to the Brooks Brothers store.

It looked as though there had been some terrible accident early in the morning (after the rain had stopped, since the muddy tire tracks had not been washed away) involving another car going onto the sidewalk.”

If anyone knows what happened, please let us know.

I wonder if it’s possibly related to the craziness at 3am-ish Saturday morning when a bunch of people were in pain?-making noise-carrying on-falling down in the middle of West End Ave at 88th? I thought it might be connected when I saw the run over meter, grate and tree. As if the accident happened and the driver/passengers fled before the cops arrived? Or it could be unrelated shenanigans.
