There may not be snow on the ground, in most of the city, but a section of Central Park is covered in the stuff today as the park prepares for Winter Jam. Snow machines have been pumping out fake snow in the Bandshell area around 72nd street.

On Saturday from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., the park will be filled with winter events like snowboarding, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. The events are free, as is the equipment. There will also be a “doggie snow zone,” an enclosed off-leash area.

Here’s what’s available, via the parks department:

Featured Venues

  • Lake Placid Snow Field
  • Cross-Country Skiing
  • Snowshoeing
  • Red Bull MetroRail
An open rail jam for skiers and snowboarders. To register, please visit the Red Bull MetroRail  page.
  • Learn to Ride: Skiing and Snowboarding
  • Unreal Ice Lounge

Other Activities

  • Watch and Learn to Play Quidditch
  • Animal Tracking with the Urban Park Rangers
  • Pride of New York Winter Market
  • NY State Ski Resorts Info Booths
  • Live Entertainment

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
