When you make products like spreadsheet-program Excel, it’s hard to seem “cool.” But Microsoft is trying, and now it’s even got an Apple-like mini-store with genius-types walking around in identical red and blue t-shirts.
The new pop-up shop is on the ground floor of the Time Warner Center near the 60th Street entrance. Customers can try out Microsoft’s Surface tablet, which runs its new Windows 8 operating software. They can also play with Windows 8 on some more traditional laptops. The store will likely be open until February, or maybe March, employees said.
No wifi in surface, no visit from me.
The Surface has wifi, just no
cellular data plan yet…

You’re right, I meant no 4G
I tried it out this weekend. The interface is pretty, and I like the cinematic aspect ratio, but the keyboard was disappointing. No tactile feedback, and you have to hit the keys really hard to register the keystroke. As a relatively fast, light-touch typer, it was impractical.
