“The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for the New York City area until 8:00 PM Wednesday. Additionally, the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory from 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM today. These conditions are dangerous to health. Avoid strenuous activity. People without air conditioning, older adults and people with chronic health conditions are most at risk. Cooling Centers will be open tomorrow. For locations, hours, and more information on avoiding heat illness and the Air Quality Index, visit www.bit.ly/NYCHeatAQI or call 311.”

News:
The turmoil created by a truck parking pilot program on West End Avenue that we wrote about first last month has left residents and truck drivers with a bad taste in their mouths — it hasn’t decreased truck double-parking and has made it harder for school buses and other vehicles to park. The 90-day pilot is scheduled to end next week.  (DNAinfo)

Texting-while-driving tickets in New York state have quadrupled in the past year. Good! (Transportation Alternatives)

Birders, a film that aired last night on HBO about bird-watchers in Central Park, brought a reviewer to tears. “I don’t know a grackle from a nuthatch, and I’m not 100% sure that either of those is in fact a bird, but I can get plenty worked up over a blue jay on the fence or a hummingbird at the feeder or any little bright-colored thing I don’t recognize stopping for a bath at the fountain; even the sight here of pigeons nesting in a shelf in a park bridge strikes me as unspeakably lovely. (Sorry? It’s just something in my eye, that’s all.)” (LA Times)

Oscar-winning actress Celeste Holm died on Sunday in her Central Park West apartment. (NY Times)

Bike-sharing will be delayed until August. It was supposed to start in July. It won’t come to the UWS until next year. (NY Times)

Re the truck parking pilot program on WEA – I hope the powers that be have the humility and good sense to recognize a bad plan when they’ve made one. Get rid of it.
