Upper West Side History Photo Challenge

This biweekly series gives West Side Rag readers the opportunity to identify historic photos that were taken in our neighborhood. It’s both a test of your knowledge of Upper West Side history and a celebration of that rich history. Each of the columns, gathered here for your convenience, consists of two sections: a new image for you to identify, and the solution to the previous challenge photo, including clues that help identify it as well as a story that the image unlocks.

About the author: Rob Garber has lived on the Upper West Side since the late 20th century and has an abiding interest in its history. His author photo is older than some of the images in this column.
