Gunfire rang out on Saturday night near Central Park after a loud fight. “Two men were arguing around 10:00 p.m. near the corner of 102nd St. and Central Park West on the Upper West Side, said Dency Salazar, 45, a doorman on the block.” Police said no one was hit.
The city is suing to gain access to a cooling tower at 28-30 West 74th Street to test it for Legionnaire’s disease. Officials say they’ve been denied access. “City health inspectors are required to test cooling towers every three months. A building rep said she believes the property “is in compliance” and said management has been in touch with the city to schedule an inspection. Cooling tower inspections became more rigorous in the city after a Legionnaire’s outbreak in the Bronx in 2015.
Learn more about New Plaza Cinemas, which is showing movies and trying to revive Lincoln Plaza Cinemas. “Lincoln Plaza Cinema’s absence has affected the overall film industry in New York City, which has a ripple effect nationwide.”
The MTA boasted about how quickly it finished renovations at stations like 86th Street, but workers continue to come back week after week because it apparently wasn’t actually finished:

Gunfire on the UWS? Yawn. Nothing to worry about: our neighborhood is safe and crime is going down … except for the stabbing last week a few blocks away from this location … the shooting of a teen a few months ago on W.93 St … the brutal attack on W84 this past summer … weekly muggings in the West 90s and 100s … and crimes in stores that owners do not even bother reporting anymore. Enjoy our safe and liberal neighborhood.
Yeah, who cares about the actual NUMBERS when you have an excuse to complain about how CERTAIN PEOPLE are ruining the neighborhood, huh?
It is safe. And predominantly liberal and Democratic which has nothing to do with crime. And the crime rate is at it’s lowest despite your impression from the cases mentioned. With the social media we are all made aware of many more instances. According the NYPD the UWS is still one of the safest in the city.
John- you are, of course, correct. See this link:

To be clear, I was responding to John’s comment made on January 14, 2019 at 2:11 pm, about the Upper West Side being one of the safest places in the City, and NOT the subsequent post about “legalizing everything,” which I assume was tongue and cheek.
Ben these are not crimes anymore. Liberals legalize everything. Drugs, gambling, prostitution, defecating on the streets, robbery (to pay for drugs) is all soon to be legal in the great state of new York.
Congrats to you long timers who miss the “old” New York City. I’m sure this gunfire brought you tears of joy.
Been and Cyrus after 2 happy people.
So people want the city to do work quickly and complain that it’s taking too long, and then when they need to come back to do repairs because the work was done so quickly, people complain about that too. Welcome to New York. Complain, complain, complain.
according to “Nmh212” (see stabbing post): “These young men are our neighbors whom we have failed to integrate in our community or to instill with the most basic values”. Is this another failure? What can I do to stop these failures? Will the failures just go on and on, and “we” are to blame? What should we do, o wise UWS liberals? More community centers? More condom give-aways to avoid teen pregnancy (sorry, but many young men don’t like to wear em!)? I know! More after school programs! Right?
““we” are to blame? ”
I don’t know, UWSHebrew, are you your brother’s keeper or not?
“brother’s keeper”? human beings, regardless of race/ethnicity who use weaponry such as knives and guns that lead to injury and death need condemnation and lawful action, NOT SYMPATHY.
Re: “Will the failures just go on and on, and “we” are to blame? ”
YUP !! Welcome to The New Populism where no one EXCEPT wealthy/educated/powerful/classy people are obviously guilty BECAUSE they are wealthy/educated/powerful/classy and the other shmegeggies (look it up) are NOT.
Sadly, it recalls me old teacherin’ days when low-lifes who “cut” (ditched) class and never paid attention when they did show up would FAIL. And then yon “administrator” (emphasis on “mini”) would ask the teacher,”What did YOU do to facilitate his/her learning?”
I’m curious as to why you and other folks who don’t seem to like the UWS, and the people who live here, stay? If I felt the way you do, I would have moved along time ago. The UWS, and for that matter most of NYC, has always been a liberal bastion. That’s not likely to change.
Ah, the dull “leave then” retort. It’s real simple: I love the neighborhood, I hate the crime and rampant agressive homeless. Since liberals are in charge, you’re all to blame.
We left living in Jerusalem because we could hear the gunfire at night.
Glad to be home.
I think when people said they miss the old NYC they mean they wish a bunch of fucking creeps like the ones posting on WSR hadn’t moved here.
With language like that methinks that describes you 😀
“methinks” ? ew.
I’ve spent the last week ditching into the 86th St station around 7:15am to get out of the wind and cold while waiting for a via. The same guys have been there every morning doing work. I saw them again today and was thinking you’re still here? The end product looks really good, but there is a lot more of it until it’s finished, so the reality is they’re not even close to finished.
