A smashed car window on 107th and Riverside.
Several car windows were smashed on Riverside Drive earlier this week, with tipsters telling us they saw smashed windows as far South as 98th street and as far North as 108th.
In 2014, a spate of break-ins on Riverside led police to add floodlights in the West 90’s to make it harder for thieves to roam undetected. Months later, officials said that the lights and increased police presence had helped lead to a decrease in break-ins.
The discovery of smashed windows this week concerned some residents.
“This has been a problem in this area in the past, though it seemed to subside considerably over the last year and a half or so,” wrote Mike, who saw at least four or five cars on Monday that had been broken into between 98th and 100th street. “It was thus surprising, and very disconcerting, to see so many cars in close proximity vandalized in presumably one spree.”
Eric Matisoff said on Monday that he saw six cars with smashed windows between 106th and 108th, and one on 104th — “this should be a good reminder to remove all valuables from parked cars.”
Update: Lieutenant Lurch of the 24th precinct tells us that a man was arrested for the crimes: “The individual arrested is a known car break-in recidivist. We would also like to take the time to let you and your readers know that we shall be increasing our patrols on Riverside Drive.”
Police officers investigating the break-ins.
Thanks to Susan for the photos.
Thank you much mayor BdB.
We are going back to the Wild West times of thirty years ago.
And once the broken windows are here to stay, broken doors and heads will follow.
Once you let it go, it goes! Big time.
We would like to inform you and your readers that an arrest was made in regards to the car break-ins that occurred on Riverside Drive. The individual arrested is a known recidivist. In addition, we will be increasing our patrols of the area.
“Recidivist.” Word of the day! Thank you for that, Lieutenant.
Uh, hey, Zeus? It was one guy and they arrested him. Get a grip.
@Zeuss…Could you please stop blaming everything that happens on the Mayor? It’s nonsensical.
@UWS-er People like him get a rush when minorities are frisked and have their civil rights violated. A real “all lives matter” type.
Minorities also get a rush when these losers who violate all of our rights get frisked and their civil rights “violated”. This is particularly true of the poor minorities who have to live with these losers.
Thank you, Lieutenant Lurch! There have been more sketchy guys around Riverside Park in the last few months.
Any reader of the ‘West Sider’ will have noticed the reports of break-ins along RSD over the past few months. It always involved high-end items: Rolex watch, $3000 computers, cameras, etc. Granted, statistically cars with expensive items on display get broken in more, but am I the only one who suspects the insurance industry is getting gamed here?
Emmy writes: ‘Minorities also get a rush when these losers who violate all of our rights get frisked and their civil rights “violated”.’
a. Just call them ‘blacks’, don’t be so PC coy.
b. and how exactly are ‘all of our rights violated’?
a. It’s not just blacks – take a look around – and no PC coyness here. All a bunch of loser criminals.
b. Right to property in this instance, violation of all our rights to live in a civilized society without a bunch of selfish criminals walking around thinking they have a right to grab whatever/whoever they want.
How cool is the name Lieutenant Lurch?
Hah! I hope Detective Fester chimes in too.
I just wish we could go back to the no-crime-ever days of Mayor Bloomberg. Not too hard to remember, and the crime reports were always so pleasant to read, and so consistent:
Murders: 0
Robberies: 0
Grand Larceny: 0
Etc.
Boy, those were the days. Thanks, Zeus, for reminding us.
I don’t understand why video surveillance can’t be installed on that stretch of Riverside Drive. This is chronic problem, very site-specific (I live on 98th and have had my car broken into there) and a seems like an easy deterrent.
I no longer live in the 24Pct, but when I did, you guys were always awesome! Best Pct in Manhattan!
Thank you for increasing Riverside Drive patrols, which I hope will extend, or at least eyeball the park. I rarely, if ever, see any police officers there, but NYPD statistics show 42 crimes from October 2014 to September 2015. I prefer to stroll Central Park, even though they have a hire crime rate stat. There are more pedestrians and better lighting.
Tinted windows seem like a good idea in the abstract. In reality, not so much.
Uh, hey, UWS-er?
Today it’s one guy.
Tomorrow two.
Three, four and five to follow soon enough.
I should get a grip?
How about you getting a grip on our lives?
This is our reality buddy, and ya better wake up and smell the stench.
Jeery,
I don’t blame everything on comrade BdB.
Just the things he’s responsible for.
Come next election, BdB won’t get elected
to be dog catcher, or better yet, ground
hog handler.
My car was broken into on Amsterdam, corner of 100th street in December. Just a few steps from precinct! When i called to report it i was told it coukd take a couple of hours for police to come, since not an emergency. They didn’t do any fingerprints so obviously didn’t expect to arrest anyone. Does this guy have my GPS and my gym bag, and my tool set
So every time there’s a crime, it’s end-of-days time? I’m not a De Blasio fan at all, but cars were broken into under Bloomberg. And Giuliani. Plus there was a quick arrest. It just doesn’t seem like there’s a reason to panic. People who are convinced De Blasio is going to return us to the 1970s use each and every crime as evidence it’s happening. It’s not.
