A man was randomly attacked with a screwdriver Thursday night on a 1 train traveling through the Upper West Side, a police spokesperson confirmed to West Side Rag.
A 61-year-old man was sitting on a southbound 1 train about 9:40 p.m., when a man walked up to him and stabbed him multiple times in the face with a screwdriver, police said. There was no apparent reason for the attack and the two men did not know each other, NYPD added.
The attacker fled the train at the West 59th Street stop and the 61-year-old man was taken to Mount Sinai West in stable condition with a cut on his mouth and the left side of his head, police said.
There have been no arrests and NYPD did not have a description of the suspect as of Friday afternoon, police said.
This story will be updated when more details are learned.

I’d bet the attacker has a lengthy arrest record, or severe mental health issues that require institutionalization.
I wish the progressive leaders would focus on this, or at least acknowledge the problem.
How many more innocent people must be attacked???
I hope the victim is okay. I have zero compassion for the attacker. Sorry, but I don’t give a flying damn about his mental health, his home life, or anything else that may have prompted him to act in such a despicable manner.
I’m surprised the attacker was able to escape so easily, without even a description or being caught on camera. There is usually a very heavy NYPD presence at that station.
Heavy police presence? There is an actual police station there! Yet they have nothing?
There’s actually a transit police precinct located inside that station! It’s completely appalling that this literally happened right under the NYPD’s noses and yet almost a full day later, no video or even description of the suspect has been made available.
I know I will get criticism for the comment but I think we need to take these people off of our streets and into institutions where they can be medicated and monitored permanently.
Why should we be the constant victims of their mental issues?
Given that we don’t know who the suspect is or anything else really, exactly who are “these people?” The vagueness in terminology speaks volumes.
Snort. Anyone who stabs a person in the face multiple times for no reason needs no specificity of terminology. LOL. The action speaks for itself.
“NYPD did not have a description of the suspect as of Friday afternoon”
The MTA’s budget is almost $20 billion per year. Why are there not cameras EVERYWHERE on the subway?
In 2022 the MTA put cameras in 100 subway cars as a test. Supposedly the test was considered successful and the program is being rolled out:

So scary. This could have happened to any one of us. Out of the blue. I believe we need a new generation of state or city run mental institutions. Many, if not all of these facilities were phased out back in the 80’s (for good reason). Patients were neglected and often mistreated.
A new, moderated system is needed. People who are mentally ill and capable of hurting themselves or others need to be institutionalized. It is dangerous for them and the rest of society for them to be on the streets. Medication only works when it is taken. They don’t necessarily belong in jail. For their safety and ours, they belong in a psychiatric hospital.
It is sad, but in my opinion, it is necessary.
