First Sunset of 2023

WSR is grateful for the gifts we receive from our readers, such as the photographs and email sent by Liz Goldstein, written on the first night of 2023.

Hi Rag, happy new year! Not sure if anyone else has written in about tonight’s stunning sunset… my willpower beat out last night’s overindulgences (surely, a bottle of Prosecco split three ways counts as “a nightcap”, right?) and I made it out for my usual run around the reservoir in time to capture these photos. It was an absolutely magical show Mother Nature put on, and on what’s probably the busiest day here at the track. Tourists and joggers were both not disappointed! It was a stunning and beautiful shared beginning for 2023.
Liz

I happened to write this yesterday for some friends:

Sunset #1 from the living room

Multicolored clouds
In battalions race east
Under celestial seas.

Pink purple blue and the moon-
The first of the year vanished…
too soon, too soon.

A fiery strut across the footlights
Then a moment of blaze replaced by the night.

Later cacophonies of explosions ripped that night
Fireworks… or an echo from nearby Ukraine?
I’m always seeing Ukraine.

I want to frame this! Could we convince Liz to extend her work to picture framing? Sunsets 🌆 are the best way advertise the UWS gorgeous-ness! ☺️
