Veterans and city leaders gather each Memorial Day at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument at 89th Street. This year, the event is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Monday, with the keynote address given by former U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson.

Other expected attendees include U.S. Navy Vice Admiral Dixon Smith, New York State Assembly member Linda Rosenthal, New York City Councilwoman Helen Rosenthal, and Manhattan Borough
President Gale Brewer.

Here’s the full events schedule for fleet week.

Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument is a beautiful and distinguishing asset to Riverside Park, spectacularly sited above the Hudson. For many years this landmark has been allowed to deteriorate, until now, public safety is of such concern that fencing is required. One might hope that appreciation of aesthetics or respect for history would move residents to insist this problem be addressed, but if neither of these is enough, there’s always the effect restoring the decrepit Monument could have on property values. I hope the new leader of Riverside Parks Conservancy, Dan Garodnick will make resolving this problem his priority, and those interested can make their own contributions to this effort: https://riversideparknyc.org/donations/

As this feature’s photo attests, The Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument is a beautiful and distinguishing feature of Riverside Park. Unfortunately, over the years this landmark has been allowed to fall into such disrepair that a fence is now required to protect passers-by from possible injury. The new head of Riverside Parks Conservancy Dan Garodnick would certainly provide a service for our community if he would see that restoring this landmark becomes a priority.

How many of the “city leaders” and politicians expected to attend this event can be said to have ever truly defied the Uniparty in the one area that perhaps more than any other makes the Democrat/Republican duopoly worthy of that title: War?

Bring our troops and home and send them no more to bleed and die in unjust wars that do nothing to keep us safe. Heed the warning of our First President, George Washington, against foreign entanglements.
