Graffiti, including several swastikas, found on buildings and phone booths on Broadway between 103rd and 105th streets on December 14 is not being treated as a hate crime, police said. The graffiti, found on the CityMD at 104th and Broadway, included the phrase “Heil Hitler” and was condemned by local politicians.
Mary Koval, the president of the 104th Street block association, discussed the graffiti at length with officers at a recent 24th precinct community council meeting.
“Captain William Burke explained to me that this [graffiti] was done by an individual, well known to the police, who has mental issues,” Koval wrote in a letter to her neighbors about the meeting. “They have picked him up and he is currently hospitalized in a psychiatric facility. Therefore, Captain Burke does not believe these were hate crimes.”
The perpetrator may be mentally ill,
but this was still motivated by hate.
Requiring different response; treatment rather than punishment.
Treatment AND punishment, not rather than.
Still a hate crime. Mental illness doesn’t manifest only in swastikas. This mentally ill person committed a hate crime.
Absolutely.
Keep creating stories in your head. Just like the new Hyde park one
Absolutely …Debbie I agree. Most people drawing swastikas on buildings ARE mentally ill.
Swastikas are ALWAYS a hate crime.
I wonder if it would be the same conclusion if it had the N word…
I believe it was you that told us all that swastikas didn’t bother you in this context, and that we were all silly little liberals for getting upset.
swastikas still don’t bother me. but that is not the point. it is the “reaction” by the authorities in deciding what is a hate crime, and what is not. when it is jew-related offenses, it is often brushed away, but if it offends other races/religions, then it explodes. double standard, as always, as usual.
Except, of course, that that is not true.
But please never let the truth interfere with your fantasies.
Like I said, you really do let your emotions get the best of you. Read your post – it’s full of hysterical drama and nothing else.
I’m sorry if you don’t know what an anecdote means (you apparently think it suggests a value judgment) and don’t understand how examine data inform an issue.
Teaching you basic statistics is well beyond the scope of this comments section.
But I do hope you do a little reading and maybe even take a class that will help you understand these very basic things.
@ Mark — I have “provided anecdotes”? How dare you downgrade those hate-filled, violent crimes I linked to as “anecdotes”. I posted those links to show how, in those cases, for every instance, Jews were attacked for being Jews, and either 1) The case was never solved / followed up for reasons unknown (city politics) 2) The case was solved, but “hate charges” were dropped. There is your EVIDENCE you demanded regarding my statement of double standards. I can see now that no matter what is presented to you, you will find a way to reply along the lines of “well you failed to prove your point”. Which shows exactly who you are and where you’re coming from. Truth and justice do not interest you, just your narrow-minded warped views on right and wrong. Bye.
Expecting evidence to back a claim isn’t snarky.
Your emotions continue to get the best of you.
And you have provided anecdotes. I’m asking for evidence of one kind of hate being ignored while another isn’t.
You have failed to provide it, which isn’t surprising.
@ Mark — to retort your snarky, “Evidence” comment. The first case is the most egregious, as there was a full description of the cars involved “2005 Cadillac Escalade with NY State plates and a Nissan Altima with Florida plates”, yet the case went nowhere. Buried. Why? Why NYPD? Why Charles Hynes? Is it because it was Jews who were attacked? Got to let the Arabs vent after all. No CCTV cameras on THE UPPER EAST SIDE caught images of the cars? Really? Disgusting.

Still waiting for evidence.
I want to clarify a bit. Anti-white (christian), hate crimes are also downplayed or ignored. That’s actually a nation-wide epidemic, that has ramped up in the last few years. I wonder why…hint: “like a fish, it stinks from the head”.
Evidence?
Don’t worry, we can wait…
Just because you want that to be the truth doesn’t mean it is true. UWSHebrew is totally correct…unless other members of the same race use the N word.
Not surprisingly he is inconsistent…
… and UWSHebrew wins the “gratuitous comment of the week” award.
How sad…but typical of the tolerant left. This sentiment also applies to Mark…thinks his view doesn’t need any “evidence”, but expects that for a contradictory one.
At the end of the day, hate is hate and it should be viewed as such…no one group should have to prove it any more than another.
Umm, sg, a person making a claim has the onus of backing that claim with evidence.
Are you saying it’s “just like the right” to make baseless claims without backing them up? Because that’ what you are doing.
Take a look at UWSHebrew’s outburst above.
You, and he, seem to suggest that I should prove a negative.
Please educate yourself. And take some deep breaths, count to 10, and let your brain rule your heart.

I love a lunch of word salad.
This is very interesting. So will Helen Rosenthal retract her comments about the political climate, a dog whistle aimed at Trump? Of course not; this is how the left rolls. They throw out insane, unsubstantiated allegations and when the facts prove them to be buffoons they act like nothing ever happened. Shame on this woman.
We can all be happy that the right never throws out “inane, unsubstantiated allegations”.
And those bullet holes are signs of gunfire either.
Ah, yes – the Insanity Defense. And if that doesn’t work, the perpetrator can always say, “I was just following orders!”
