One person was arrested and charged with criminal mischief after police said the person smashed the front window of Candle Bar, the gay bar at 309 Amsterdam Avenue that served its last drink on Monday night, according to Capt. Michael Falcon, the precinct’s commanding officer.

Police have not released the name of the person who was arrested or any additional details about the crime, and did not respond to a question about whether this is being treated as a hate crime.

Update: Bartender Amonte Demarko said that the window was broken by a former employee at the bar who got into an argument and threw a barstool into the window.

We posted a photo gallery of the bar’s last night here.

Horrible homophobic act of violence, especially here on the UWS. Hope the perp is found and prosecuted for hate crimes.

I hope we prosecute people who demand we prosecute “hate” crimes, it’s a crime

Yes, charge this perp with a hate crime, Gretchen. He clearly hated his former employer.

Hate Crimes are one of the dumbest aspects of the legal system.

It’s either illegal or it isnt. The color of your skin, or what sex you wish to have sex with should not confer you “extra” rights.
