The weekend ahead is filled with great events, including two we’ll highlight below:
The Phoenix at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine
That massive bird at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine that we told you about a few weeks ago will have its official unveiling on Saturday with events starting at 9 a.m. This page describes the main celebration starting at 2 p.m. , and several more events are listed in this document. The action starts with yoga under the phoenix at 9 a.m. and includes several performances starting at 2 p.m. Among the performers is Philip Petit, the tight-rope walker who became famous for walking on a wire between the twin towers. I wonder what he’ll be up to?
El Taller Latino Anniversary Celebration
El Taller, a cultural center on 104th street and Broadway, is celebrating 35 years on the Upper West Side starting this weekend. The first event is on Saturday night at 8 p.m., when Hudson Valley Sally puts on a folk concert. El Taller is currently fighting for its survival because of a rent increase. It’s lease expires in October, and the directors are concerned they’ll be evicted. So go out and support them. Tickets cost $25. You can also sign a petition against the eviction here.
