Friday night is expected to be the coldest night in 10 years, the coldest night since your girlfriend left you for that investment banker. COLD!
No no, we’re talking physical cold here. As per Gothamist:
“The National Weather Service is calling for a low of one degree above zero. The last time it was that cold was on January 16th, 2004. By tomorrow afternoon, however, the temperature should rebound to the upper 20s as this cold air mass gets pushed away as yet another cold front begins to approach from the Midwest.”
Cold is an annoyance to most of us, but it can be deadly for people exposed to the worst of it. All Angels’ church at 251 West 80th street is looking for help to serve homeless people tonight. Here are the details, via Hope for New York:
“All Angels’ is providing emergency shelter for our neighbors to find refuge from the cold and snow tonight, and so they’re asking for donations of snack food and toiletries to provide for their guests.
If you’re nearby today, you can drop off toiletries (soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, socks, etc.) or snacks (granola bars, trail mix, etc.) at All Angels’ Church at 251 W 80th St between Broadway and West End.
All Angels’ also needs a few volunteers (2 men and 2 women) to spend the night (from 7:30PM tonight to tomorrow morning) and serve as hosts for the people who come to stay. If you’re available, you can e-mail Akira at akira.j.tsuchiya@gmail.com
. Thanks for using your snow day to serve!”
Thanks to Redeemer West Side for the tip. And stay warm, everyone.

Avi — Thanks for posting this and helping me “get over myself.” I was sitting around feeling sorry for myself because my weekend plans are not going to happen. Saw your posting and I rounded up every nut bar in my house, and all the extra toiletries from hotels (and from Costco’s overbuying) and dropped them off at the church. I urge everyone else to do the same.
That’s a good word, Harriet.
