The Hallett Nature Sanctuary, a four acre parcel in the Southeast portion of Central Park that was closed to the public for decades, now has expanded visiting hours. The sanctuary was closed by Robert Moses to remain as a bird sanctuary from 1934 to 2001, but the Central Park Conservancy restored it by removing invasive species and planting new ones.
Although recent articles have implied the sanctuary (located at the green icon in the map at right) is a closed “secret,” the conservancy has been offering tours and limited visiting hours for more than two years. We wrote about it in 2014.
Now the conservancy has introduced more public visiting hours, as detailed here and below (there are also tours that cost $15).
Visiting the Hallett Nature Sanctuary
There are two ways to visit:
- You can explore the Hallett with Conservancy guides on an Official Tour.
- Central Park Conservancy will host open hours in the Hallett Nature Sanctuary at the following times:
April 1 – June 30
Monday, Wednesday, Friday: 2:00 pm – 5:00 pmJuly 1 – August 31
Monday & Friday: 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Wednesday: 2:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Sunday: 11:00 am – 1:00 pmPlease Note
The Hallett Nature Sanctuary remains closed on holidays. In the case of inclement weather, including heavy or prolonged rain, Hallett open hours are canceled. As space is limited, access is on a first-come, first-served basis, and may require a wait to enter. In order to balance management of the landscape and the immersive experience, visitors are allowed to enter as others leave. Sorry, no dogs, bicycles, or strollers are permitted.

so basically if you work during the week you have one 2 hour window to go for 2 months? 🙁
But you can take a sick day to heal yourself though
