A police officer from the 20th precinct grabbed an air conditioner that was dangling by its cord from a building on 76th street, keeping it from crashing to the ground.
Officer Brian Dobbins was responding to another issue on May 24 around 7:30 p.m.”when a couple of people flagged him requesting his help,” according to Capt. Levon Holley of the 20th precinct. An air conditioner was dangling from a fifth floor window at 59 West 76th street by its cord. Someone let Dobbins in through a second floor apartment, and he climbed up to the fourth floor via the fire escape.
He then “asked the lady to try to swing the AC towards him. After a couple of swings Officer Dobbins caught the air conditioner. The lady was trying to install the AC when all this happened.”
The NYPD suggests you use brackets when installing your air conditioner.

That’s one COOL cop!
:ducks:
avoids the incoming trolling I’m about to receive
I am definitely NYPD blue. We have a great PD overall.
I worry about this sort of thing all the time.
That is very prudent of you. My kitchen AC had been installed by the building engineer many years ago. When a brick fell from the building (sound familiar) it struck the AC, causing it to fall from the window.
Redid those installations!
An illustration of why one should always leave a/c installation to an experienced professional.
I thought it was a city requirement that buildings HAD to use brackets when installing air conditioners.
This is a serious problem, and people don’t realize that they put others in danger when they install their window AC improperly.
The Dept. of Buildings has guidelines for how to install a window AC unit: https://www1.nyc.gov/site/buildings/homeowner/installing-air-conditioning-unit.page
Officer Dobbins looks like one hunky cop! Eat yer heart out, Dwayne Johnson! NYPD’s finest has been doing a great job in our neighborhood lately, from what I’ve observed…including frequent mounted patrol. This kind of presence in the community makes an invaluable difference not only in crime prevention but positive relationships between law enforcement and the residents. Well done.
And since it’s nice to recognize positive services: I called 311 recently to report a dead tree. They not only removed it in a timely fashion, but today I discovered the city replacing it with a new, healthy tree.
I hate to quote Donald Rumsfeld especially in an UWS forum but here goes anyway – Shit happens. Thankfully there are good people and good cops to help! I’ve had stuff happen in the hood and the 20th Precinct guys and girls are the best! I am so grateful. OK, I’m ready for the whiners and the haters!
I know the girl in the window, she held on for dear life!! She was so afraid to let it drop! Her forearms are all bruised from the window sill, but please know…she learned a valuable lesson, next time she will ask for help.
This is not a suggestion, it is a requirement. All air conditioners in my Riverdale building were put on brackets last year.
shes a fighter… one strong woman!
It’s amazing to me that the cord could accommodate the weight of the AC (which I’m sure is not particularly light!). Unbelievable that cord didn’t “snap” when swung to the office. Just grateful no one was hurt thanks to an alert police officer and a young lady determined not to let a tragedy happen.
Great job by the cop! Thank God he was there. Warning to everyone about this. I was almost hit by an air conditioner on Amsterdam Ave several years ago. It missed me by about a foot and the two guys that dropped it were in the window laughing.
Clearly a sleeve there that AC unit should be placed in!!
Dumb tenant.
No. Those sleeve accommodate decades old air conditioning units. Today’s models are much smaller. Hense the need for a window installation.
Can you see a thru-wall AC sleeve below the window?
Yes, and they were built for 1960s era units. They are not used anymore.
The sleeves could be used – air conditioners to fit them are still made, but cost two to three times what a window unit of similar capacity costs. I wish my building had sleeves; I’d happily pay the extra money to not have a window blocked.
well if you look one floor down, the tenant has not used the sleeve, hence it may be filled. btw – i know the tenant, she is a successful investment analyst at a large hedge fund.
No wonder she wasn’t following the law.
Hedgies!
This girl should be given a medal for holding on to such a heavy unit for so long, to protect those below her. Who is she?
I think I know this girl..if it’s who I think it was she was a division 1 athlete….good thing she was strong enough to hold on!
I heard there is another “layer” to this story…..
Do tell!!!
You got our attention now!
