A user of social website Reddit created a map of good coffee spots near Manhattan subway stations, with more than a dozen spots highlighted on the Upper West Side. The map, posted below, highlights independent spots rather than Starbucks.
The person who made the map, who calls himself rickeymikeabono on Reddit, said he used Zagat reviews and taste tests to choose his favorite spots. The choices are debatable, of course. In fact, we’d love to hear a debate in the comments section; if we get enough good suggestions, we’ll create our own local map.
Is it just me, or did anyone else have to look up “Sasha’s” as the best coffee by the 96th St. Subway stop. I always thought the place was just called “Coffee.”
(Coffee is just fine at Manhattan Diner, by the way… for “Diner Coffee.”
Good point David. Yeah, had never heard of “Sasha’s.”
What about Piccolo Cafe right near 72nd street!!!?? Hands down, best coffee ever!!!! plus great to grab a quick bite on the go! They are also by other stations too! 40th and 8th, and by the L train on 14th! 🙂
Agreed! Great coffee and food, though it may have been too far from the subway station to satisfy the criteria. We can add it to a neighborhood coffee map though. Avi
Distance can’t be that much of an issue, because Toulousaine is about 5 blocks from the 103rd St station.
Problem is, how many of those coffee shops are actually close to the subway station?
Take B’way and 110th St for example, Hungarian Pastry is a long block and around the corner on Amsterdam. Oren’s at the corner of 112th may actually be closer to the subway station.
Piccolo over Irving Farms? No way.
Plus, Piccolo Cafe is a….cafe. Not a coffee joint.
I got food poisoning at Chipped Cup not once, but twice. At your own risk.
Irving Farm is the best coffee I have ever had – and now we have Fika too. Heaven.
Dont you think that they will be sued for copyright infringement, as they virtually copied the MTA subway map?
I’d like to see a similar map for restaurants on the number 1 line.
I love this! And I think he’s hit the right places for many of the stops I know. As for the best places near the 110th Street and 116th Street stations, I’d vote for the Hungarian for 110th (yes, it’s a bit of a walk, but it’s such a classic place) and Oren’s for 116th. (Unless I’m mistaken, Post Crypt is open on the Columbia campus only occasionally, though please correct me if I’m wrong.)
