TRADER JOE’S RUNS OUT OF FOOD AS SUPPLY TRUCKS DELAYED

Photo by Rebecca Frey of a sad empty shelf at Trader Joe’s. No brown rice and quinoa fusilli pasta!?!

For the Upper West Side, this registers as a catastrophe.

Shelves were bare on Thursday afternoon at Trader Joe’s on 72nd street and Broadway because the company’s supplier in Pennsylvania was hit with power failures, a cashier told Rebecca Frey. There were no deliveries to the store on Wednesday night; they are “hoping for today but not crossing their fingers.”

“Nuts, canned stuff, cereal, olive oil, pasta all running low or gone. Eggs and salad cases were still 1/2 full.”

Two months ago Trader Joe’s refrigerators lost power, causing a brief panic.

Meh! I only ever shopped there once. Typical ‘big box’ limited selection of low-quality products – even the bread I bought was moldy! Fairway is a hundred times better!

This TJs seems to be missing something. I’ve stopped buying salads there after having a couple of bad experiences. Things don’t seem to be stocked regularly. Too bad, since it is convenient. But something is amiss in store management.

People, if you’re buying products in clear bags/containers (e.g. bread or salad) you cannot complain if they are spoiled. Use your eyes.

As far as the stocking goes, this TJ’s always has a double-line 50 yards long – it’s really busy and they maybe run out of quinoa now and then, even if power outages don’t happen the next state over. Get a grip.

Not the first time. They run out of food on a regular basis — can’t keep up with the traffic. Store is too small and they need faster restocking.

I love it when they tell you “it’s not in season” ! and the next day the blueberries or whatever, are right there!

The store and management is great. It just wasn’t built to handle the volume it has attracted. Any tips on if another one will be opening on the uws?

There is no comparison between TJ’s and Fairway. TJ’s wins hands down. The staff at TJ’s are beyond helpful, management customer friendly, and the prices are great. That’s why this store has lines out the door at least 4 days a week. This store does insane volume of business.
Oh and if you ever have a problem with anything you buy, tell them and they will refund your purchase price – no hassles at all. Good luck getting that at Fairway.

TJ’s could certainly afford to expand into the old Food Emporium space on W 68th St which would begin to solve many of these problems

Would opening a new location 4 blocks from their current store really be the best idea thought? I think upper 90’s makes more sense.

while TJ’s has always been successful it got much busier after the Food Emporium at 68th & Bdwy closed in May. The community south of TJ’s lost the FE and a Gristedes on CPW in addition to several convenience stores on both Columbus and Amsterdam. Open a new market where the people need the shopping which is now south. Going north into the 90’s are many more markets and convenience stores as the rent is much less. The 4 block difference would be great for maintaining a much needed larger inventory right here where it is badly needed. 68th St is also all ground level and much less intimidating for those who have escalator concerns. One location should not however preclude another.

re: “hoping for today but not crossing their fingers.”

Madness. Cross your fingers! (just don’t hold your breath). Geez, like luck just comes to you without any effort. This is the problem with the world today. No one is willing to cross their fingers anymore to get things done.
