Bye, bye Buster! Blockbuster has finally ended its liquidation sale, and there are numerous other Upper West Side retail stores that are closing, relocating or opening. Check out what we’ve been hearing.
Blockbuster: The movie rental spot on 93rd and Broadway has closed for good. The rumor now is that it will become an Applebee’s. This rumor is freaking everyone out, as you can see in the comments section of our last piece. Thanks to Steven for the photo.
Brandy Melville: The bargain women’s clothing store is opening on Broadway between 104th and 105th in the former home of Hot and Crusty. The space is owned by the city’s Economic Development Corporation, says DNAinfo. “‘There aren’t a lot of clothing stores [in the area],’ said EDC staffer Caroline Stephenson, who described the store as geared toward ’18-to-25-year-old [women]’ and ‘extremely affordable.'” Here’s the website for Brandy Melville.
Medici: The shoe store on Columbus between 80th and 81st street has closed and is for rent. Thanks to Angie for the photo.
Aldo: The shoe store on the corner of 86th and Broadway is moving to the former location of Coach on 84th and Broadway, probably this summer. Thanks to Serene and anonymous for the tips.
L’Occitane: The soap and beauty store on 83rd and Broadway is for rent. (Or id this close a while back and we just didn’t notice?) Realtor David Chkheidze at Massey Knackal just put the space on the market.
what about Food City on 94th and Columbus that has been around for over 35 years??? what is the story with that closing????
What happened to Epices? (Here is a new awning up but no opening yet.
Oh No! Not L’Occitane! Where am I ever going to buy my whatever it was they sold?
At the L’Occitaine on 76th and Broadway. Problem solved! 😉
My wife LOVED Medici.
P.S. What’s the story behind Big Nick’s being still there after the close-scare of Feb 1? I must have missed…
I never heard Food City in closing? Where did that rumor come from??
That would be GREAT. That whole space and completely waste of space/ugly/block disrupting plaza in-front of it could be used for a LOT better uses. We have enough grocery stores in the 90s on Columbus.
The interior of Food City is so depressing I needed 6 weeks on Prozac after visiting just once. The Dags 50 yards away is far less depressing, unless it depresses you to pay $6.59 for half a gallon of milk.
Do u have any updates on Aged the restaurant 88th St & Broadway?
As of the evening of April 4 – still closed. It looked like all the furniture in the dining room had been moved aside and stacked – as though there had been some problem in the room. The bar is still stocked and the computer at the reception podium was on with a screensaver bouncing around on the screen.
Yuk. Who needs Aldo on 84th? It is shoe mania up here. Harrys, DSW, the one on 82nd, the other crappy one on 83rd that sells shoes for woman with sore feet. So banks, drugstores and now shoestores. WE WANT FOOD
I was going to post about Aged also. Just noticed today (April 3rd) the sign in their window saying they’d reopen March 22nd. Apparently not.
Any idea what’s going into the empty Portrait Bug/Old Verizon Store/Former Bank space on 91st and Broadway?
Rumor had it that the bank space was supposed to become a Chipolte – but that seems to have fallen through. That was also before Portrait Bug and the Verizon store closed. Now the available space is potentially much bigger.
Maybe Outback will feel the need to compete with the future Applebee’s at 93rd Street 🙂
It looks like the Chipotle is happening. Just saw them hiring online for a new restaurant in 10024.
Please Ken, don’t even make jokes like that!
The ‘For Rent’ signs at the long vacant former Georgia’s restaurant / pastry shop on SE corner of 89th/Bway disappeared in the last few days.
Have no fear – remember Boston Market on 80-something street — it opened, was jammed for a week — and closed in six months. On 93rd-94th , however, we have two big tourist hotels…..perhaps that’s what they are counting on.
I think it closed because the food was just awful.
No Chipolte on 93rd. The hiring is for the one are opening on 83rd where Neo sushi used to be
Yup. There were supposed to be two opening – 92nd and 84th. Then nothing happened for almost a year. They finally started construction at 83rd last fall. It has all evolved very very slowly.
There’s now a For Rent sign in the Blockbuster window! Maybe it’s not going to be an Applebee’s anymore! It might have only been a rumor! Lets keep out fingers crossed
Applebees BACKED OUT. I know this – confirmed.
Where did you hear Applebee’s backed out? How is it confirmed? Does this mean they are just going to open up somewhere else in the hood??
