Every Wednesday morning, West Side Rag publishes a new “Openings & Closings” column which gives up-to-date information about restaurants, stores, and businesses coming to and going from the neighborhood. We always have news to share, and each column usually has five or six entries- which quickly add up.

Each July we publish a “mid-year very long list” and in December an “end of year very long list.” These lists include all of the openings and closings we have covered in their respective six month periods. The lists also include businesses that are planning to open soon, temporary pop-ups, relocations, and renovations. Below is our list from the first half of 2026.

The Openings & Closings column would not be possible without our many tipsters; thank you! Please keep the tips coming, we love hearing from you and photos are always appreciated. Anyone can send tips about openings and closings to info@westsiderag.com. So keep your eyes open and cameras out when walking around the neighborhood.

Wishing all of our readers a very Happy July 4th and please stay cool in the heatwave!

Anyone know what’s opening in old Broadway Farm? For Rent sign Dow, and being gutted.

Both are valuable. The latter would show how long the businesses stay in business.

I read somewhere (sorry, I can’t remember where!) that it isn’t going to ever happen. Something about the area being saturated with grocery stores. I still would have shopped there!

Approximately 75% of this entire list is “service-oriented” businesses like restaurants, salons and nail spas, exercise places, etc. This is because, with the advent of the Internet, “bricks and mortar” stores are mostly unnecessary, since you can buy those things online and have them delivered to your door in a couple of days. You can’t get service-oriented business online.

This is why “empty storefront syndrome” continues to exist. While it may have started with landlord greed, that is no longer the “driving force”; it is simply that most “physical” things (from clothing to furniture) can be purchased online.

So I will cheer a little more loudly for the non-service-oriented businesses that have opened, as well as for those that have remained over the years, since we were losing them in huge numbers for at least a decade.

Bravo!!!

Glad someone asked about Wegmans which means I don’t have to, but what about Miznon on Broadway between 112th and 113th. It’s been sitting there since the beginning of the pandemic. Every once in a while, a few people show up to do some work, and the door is open, but nothing ever happens.
