A popular New York City food market is opening an Upper West Side location next month.
Smorgasburg, a well-known open-air food market that has drawn crowds for more than a decade in Brooklyn, will bring its wares starting on May 14 to Columbus Circle at the southwest corner of Central Park.

Smorgasburg will have more than 25 vendors at the Columbus Circle outpost, which will run every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday through September 19, from noon to 8 p.m. Entry to the market is free, but the vendors all charge money. The market will be open rain or shine.
The food market company hasn’t announced the details yet on the vendor list for the incoming Upper West Side location.
Smorgasburg is entering into its 16th season and has other operations in Williamsburg, Prospect Park, and the the World Trade Center.

Sounds (and should taste) great.
I am unclear – what happens to the “regular” food carts-vendors there?
Don’t they pay a fee to the City for their license and ability to operate?
Won’t Smorgasburg cut into their earnings?
Presumably, I expect this functions just like the winter market.
The winter market sells gift type items – not food.
NYC recently passed legislation to protect street vendors and to expand the number of licenses.
NYC seeks to support street vendors, then does this?
The winter market also sells foods and drinks (desserts, sandwiches, pasta, etc.)
That area is filled daily by venders are they all being kicked out?
I hope so, they are mostly all operating illegally. New York law requires clear posting of pricing, none of them do, except for Nathan’s that proudly displays its $8 mediocre hot dogs. If you see a vendor without pricing, move on, they are trying to rip you off.
Thank you for saying the truth, that it’s Columbus Circle not Central Park. They’re trying to sell it as in the park.
“but the vendors all charge money”. How dare they! I will have Mamdani look into this at once!
WSR – Any chance you could followup and get info on the trash plan?
Thank you for your work!
Will the rats have to cross the street now to get to Columbus Circle ?
exactly !! oh boy, a huge environmental disaster between excessive trash, debris on the floor and just an overall crowded situation in an already high volume location..
I’m beyond excited about this!
It’s just a bunch of food trucks.
It’s not like Elvis was spotted.
more vendors. ?? they tend to unhealthy food and expensive. It’s gonna make the area like a circus
unfortunately
