Every Wednesday morning, West Side Rag publishes a new “Openings & Closings” column which gives up to date information on restaurants, stores, and businesses coming to and going from the neighborhood. We always have news to share, and each column usually has five or six entries–which quickly add up. 2025 has been a busy year on the Upper West Side. In July we published a list of over 90 businesses that opened (or had plans to open) in the first half of the year.

Now that the year is coming to a close, we have put together an alphabetical list of all the openings we have covered over the past six months (there are over 100)! The list also includes businesses that are planning to open soon, temporary pop-ups, renovations, and relocations.

The Openings & Closings column wouldn’t be possible without our many tipsters; thank you and please keep the tips coming! We love hearing from you. Anyone can send tips about openings and closings to info@westsiderag.com. Photos are always appreciated! So keep your eyes open and your cameras out when walking around the neighborhood. Wishing all of our readers a very Happy New Year!

Is Carrot Express still set to open? I haven’t seen any movement there in months.

It was eye-boggling, but not boring. Cld even be fun. As for the hard time we had in the 70’s econ. downturn, what a sin destroying irreplaceable metal artistry. Theft of interior apt. bldg brass fixtures went on thru the 80’s.

Most of these new places sell food or personal services. I am glad that with the loss of so many stores that sell dry goods like linens, some of the slack has been taken up by enterprises that provide things that are less easy to get via delivery.

Zoma Express has been my biggest fave of all the new ones

(Koo Thai also great, and exciting to have a Xi’an location in the 100s again :))

Thank you for this list! Now that the 104th Street scaffolding is gone, something should take over the empty Nuts storefront.

Amsterdam Hardware is a great store! I’ve been there several times and they always have what I’m looking for. Much better than Broadway Hardware between 105 & 106. I really hope the neighborhood supports them!

Yes, we have had a great number of new openings, and that is obviously a good thing. And yet “empty storefront syndrome” remains a serious issue. In this regard, it should not be surprising that the overwhelming majority of new openings have been service-oriented businesses (restaurants, bars, nail salons, spas, etc.), since they are they only things one cannot get online – and the Internet has done more to “maintain” empty storefront syndrome than any other single factor; if you don’t “need” bricks-and-mortar because you can get anything online – sometimes cheaper, and often within a day or two – then non-service businesses are not going to be able to open and survive.

We need to find something to do about this.
