La Bomboniera, an Italian espresso and wine bar, opened on November 3rd  at 203 West 82nd Street (between Amsterdam Avenue and Broadway). The menu features Italian coffee, pastries, biscotti, small plates, panini, wine, and cocktails.  It is owned by husband-and-wife team Nela and Artie Hidric; they  also have a location on the Upper East Side. La Bomboniera in Italian means “a box of gifts,” Nela Hidric told West Side Rag on a phone call. The wine bar will feature “a blend of Italian coffee culture and European wine bar vibes,” she said. Hours are: Monday through Wednesday, 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Thursday and Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturdays, 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.; and Sunday 8:00 a.m. to  8 p.m.  “We are very excited to be part of the neighborhood,” Hidric told the Rag. The space was previously Fang Cleaners and a palm-reading business. (Thanks to Christopher for the tip.)

Safta’s Coffee and Fine Foods, on Broadway at West 86th Street, closed permanently earlier this week. Photo by Lisa Kava.

Safta’s Coffee and Fine Foods, a kosher market at 2345 Broadway (at West 86th Street), closed permanently on November 3rd, owner Sonny Gindi confirmed to West Side Rag on a phone call. He did not want to give a reason for the closing but said that he “wishes the community all the best.” Safta’s opened in February 2025 and sold Middle Eastern-inspired pastries, grab-and-go meals and curated pantry items. The shop also sold bagels, sandwiches, challah, and babka, and offered private catering as well. (Thanks to Tom for the tip.)

Willet’s Corner, a American-style restaurant, has opened in the Amsterdam Avenue space formerly occupied by Black Lab Cafe. Photo by Patrick Dolande.

Willet’s Corner, a restaurant with a “healthful menu designed for sharing,” opened on November 4th at 420 Amsterdam Avenue (at West 80th Street.) For now, the restaurant is open for dinner Tuesdays through Saturdays from 4:30 p.m. to 11 p.m., but future plans include Saturday and Sunday brunches. Willet’s Corner “offers a menu of shareable ingredient driven dishes alongside a beverage program that highlights classic cocktails,” a representative wrote to West Side Rag. Menu items include snackable dishes such as fig toast with whipped ricotta, roasted za’atar cauliflower, squash and sage flatbread, among others. The restaurant also serves sandwiches, a selection of pastas, and housemade desserts. It is owned by Ken Halberg, formerly of Hardings, an American restaurant which was in Flatiron for 25 years. Willet’s Corner is named for Halberg’s father’s street — Willet’s Drive — in the Hudson Valley.  The restaurant has an 11-seat bar in addition to the dining room. Black Lab Cafe, the dog-friendly restaurant which closed in February 2025, was previously in the space.

NY Loves Yoga, forced out of its West 83rd Street studio by a fire last week, is temporarily sharing space with Momentum Fitness on Columbus Avenue. Photos by Lisa Kava.

NY Loves Yoga, a yoga studio at 140 West 83rd Street (between Columbus and Amsterdam Avenues), temporarily relocated to Momentum Fitness, at 246 Columbus Avenue (at West 72nd Street), on November 2nd. The move is due to a fire in the building where NY Loves Yoga was located, which occurred in the morning of October 27th, damaging the studio. “The fire was severe enough that we will not be back in at 83rd Street for six months,” MJ Watkins, the owner, told West Side Rag.

“Marco Guanilo, the owner of Momentum fitness emailed us with his kindness and generosity giving us the opportunity to share his space through December,” Watkins told the Rag. Guanilo used to live on West 83rd Street and often attended yoga classes at NY Loves Yoga. “My wife and I are both local business owners, so we are very big on giving back to the community and this seemed like the right thing to do for a fellow local business in need,”  Guanilo said. He is committed to sharing his space through the end of the year, for which Watkins is very grateful.

“Without Marco stepping up, there’s a good chance we would have lost our business,” Watkins said. (Thanks to Sharon for the tip.)

The Wells Fargo location on Broadway at West 70th Street is moving three blocks north to the Ansonia building next week. Photos by Sara Lewin Lebwohl.

Wells Fargo Bank  at 2039 Broadway (at West 70th Street), is closing that location on November 7th, and will be relocating to 2101 Broadway (at West 73rd Street). The new branch, which is in the Ansonia building, will open on November 10th at 9 am. The space was previously occupied by The North Face which closed in January 2023.

The Openings & Closings column wouldn’t be possible without our many tipsters: thank you! Anyone can send tips about openings and closings in the neighborhood to info@westsiderag.com.

I’m so surprised about Safta’s as I JUST learned about it through social media and I was eager to give them a try..I t has only been about a week since I saw their videos pop up. I’m sorry to hear that they have closed and wish them well.

I walk past Safta’s several times a day. It looked fine but I never had any motivation to go there. I am sorry it is gone but not surprised. That is a weird corner. I’m not sure what the optimal tenant would be. It gets a ton of foot traffic but that is a small store. Hopefully not a smoke shop. Too small for fast food.

Saftas never defined itself. It had some burekas (ok not great) , random frozen items, bagels, coffee. No attempt at decor at all, limited hours . It was like trying to be a kosher bodega in a neighborhood that already has many better options. I think it was modeled after the owners other store in midtown byt on the UWS you dont need to go to store like that to buy kosher frozen products.

It is kosher so limited hours, alas. The seating options were terrible there. And something happened because it would be slammed on a Sunday and zi was just there a few weeks ago and no one was there.

And the frozen food options seemed pretty sillly. And the halva ice cream bar, where there had been seating – I don’t know there is much demand for halva ice cream PLUS two tables was not great.

Limited hours – like not open for the morning rush. Perhaps not the best business decision for a store that sells pastries, bagels, and coffee.

We need more people like Marco Guanilo and his wife in this world! How nice that they offered temporary space in their fitness gym to the small yoga studio displaced by fire.

I am really proud that so many of us voted. But all voted better? The man got half the votes. Half the voters voted for other people.

Agreed that only 1 closing is nice though

Not sure if this eas covered earlier and I missed it. The Northwell Health Urgent Care on Amsterdam and 69th has closed. A sign on the door directs people to their East 83rf St location. Nobody will do that considering there is a City MD about 200 feet away.

Oh no! Northwell has been my go to when urgent care is needed. That City MD is awful in my experience.

You will if your health insurer doesn’t have a deal with City MD. Last time I was there it cost me $300 out of pocket!

That reminds me – there’s signage on the corner of Broadway and 68th (where the old Food Emporium, then Lowe’s used to be) that says NYU Langone Medical. At least I think it was 68th; it could have been 67th – I saw it from a cab.

Sorry seeing Wells Fargo leave 70th St. Seems there aren’t many places opening in lower 70’s & upper 60’ . Miss all the former staples!

I walked into Safta’s when it first opened and saw the few items they had were priced sky high. $12 for a piece of babka? There is a fine bakery just up the road at 88th street and a full service kosher marketplace a few blocks north of that. This store served no purpose and so it closed. While I am always sorry for empty storefronts in our area, perhaps we can get something that meets the neighborhood .needs.

“Willet’s Corner ‘offers a menu of shareable ingredient driven dishes alongside a beverage program that highlights classic cocktails,’ a representative wrote to West Side Rag.“

“ingredient driven dishes” 😆 Food consists of ingredients. So this is tautological nonsense. It’s like saying “public-facing entertainer” or “profit-driven capitalist.”

Also: “beverage program”? — how about, I don’t know, “drinks menu” or “cocktail list.”

Marketing should draw you in without your knowing how, not make you laugh at its ham-handedness.

I swear there’s an arsonist in that area near NY Loves Yoga. How many businesses have we read about that have had issues with fire in that three block radius?

New resident here but seems I missed out on fang cleaners? Yikes. Was this a pop-up service provider for the Halloween season? Or a nocturnal dental professsional for blood thirsters?

Around the June 2025 primary, Safta’s started posting a lot of pro-Cuomo messages on their official bakery instagram, joking they’d give patrons free baked goods for voting their way, which really turned me off. Plenty of other places to buy overpriced baked goods in the neighborhood.

I was excited at first when Safta’s opened- thought I could grab some grandmotherly comfort foods before getting on the bus- but I found their selection confusing and never got anything.
