Zohran Mamdani Won the Upper West Side: Neighborhood Voter Breakdown

November 5, 2025 | 11:29 AM
in NEWS, POLITICS

The New York Times voter breakdown for the Upper West Side.

By Gus Saltonstall

Zohran Mamdani won the Upper West Side in the race for mayor on Tuesday night, according to a voter breakdown by The New York Times.

Mamdani secured 51 percent of the votes in the neighborhood in the General Election, compared to Andrew Cuomo’s 46 percent, The New York Times analysis shows. The Times defined the Upper West Side as around West 58th to 110th streets.

This is a major change from the Democratic Primary in June, when Cuomo won the Upper West Side by four points over Mamdani, meaning there was a nine-point swing toward the Queens assemblymember this November.

In part, it indicates that Upper West Siders who voted for Brad Lander in the Democratic primary, who secured 25 percent of the neighborhood vote in June, chose to back Mamdani over Cuomo.

There are also noticeable trends within the UWS voting breakdown depending on where in the neighborhood the ballots came from.

In general, Cuomo won the voting precincts in the southern portion of the neighborhood, from around West 59th to 86th Street, while Mamdani won more of the votes from West 87th to 110th streets.

Cuomo particularly dominated west of Broadway from 59th to 86th streets, and Central Park West from 59th to 67th streets. Mamdani’s strongest neighborhood pockets came east of Broadway from 87th to 110th streets, and he won all but two voting precincts from West 100th to 110th streets.

Returning to the Lander impact, you can see below that the Upper West Siders who voted for the city comptroller in June (purple squares), then switched their votes to Mamdani at a higher rate than they did to Cuomo.

While the Upper West Side trended toward Mamdani in the General Election when compared to the Democratic primary race, the Upper East Side only got stauncher in its support of Cuomo, according to The New York Times.

Cuomo won the Upper East Side by 24 percentage points on Tuesday night, compared to a 16 percent margin of victory in the June primary.

Overall, Mamdani won Manhattan in the General Election by 10 percentage points, the Times analysis shows.

We need to stop with the identity politics. Antisemitism has no place in elections. Mamdani was the only candidate proposing something – affordability.

Unfortunately all his policy’s will make it more unaffordable. Increase in property tax’s, increase MW, Increase income taxes, increase corporate tax. Rents will go up in check.

It’s not as if we could choose to change our Jewish identity. We have never had that luxury. Most (not all, much to my surprise) Jewish people, including myself, have a serious problem with a leader who denies Israel’s right to exist as aJewish homeland, a safe haven against the oldest form of bigotry. Most Jewish people think that such Anti-Zionism is in fact antisemitism. So, one should be able to see, even if one disagrees, why the election of a self-professed, ardent anti-Zionist is a very big deal for most Jews. How could we be expected to support someone we are convinced has singled us out,, and not in a good way. 🙂

Yup and 1200 rabbis signed a letter calling him out. I guess they must be imagining things. Mamdani isn’t fooling anyone with his plausible deniability game except those wishing to be fooled, and its pretty amazing and sad that a city concerned with fighting every real or imagined “ism” in the world pretends not to hear his dog whistles. The whole country will be watching him and his friends now.

Here here Janice. Jon does not speak for all Jewish New Yorkers who grew up on the Upper West Side. I do not want to repeat what Janice says so eloquently. I just would ask all Jews to think about why a Muslim Mayoral candidate who supports Israeli’s right to exist and wants justice for Palestinians and an end to the theocratic reactionary government of Netanyahu has provoked such responses. Why are you holding on to an Israel that doesn’t exist anymore. Why do jews hold some special place when it comes to bigotry and hate? We are all in this together. So many people are hurting. It saddens me that people can’t see beyond their own tribe.

You realize you’re advocating for an apartheid state, and you’re also proving justification for those who’d ghettoize Jews outside of Israel?

Mamdani simply advocates that Israel treat all citizens equally, but that’s not how Israel operates, then there’s the illegal occupation of the West Bank.

I’m Jewish. And my Jewish maternal grandmother’s siblings and parents were murdered by Nazis in the holocaust. I was triggered and sickened by what happened on Oct. 7th (and still am) and loathe Hamas. I have friends and family in Israel and have visited many times. I’m not a member of Jews for Peace nor am I one of the Free Palestine protestors. And I am anti-Zionist. Because right now, Israel is a far-right theocracy. I believe in Israel’s right to exist–as does Mamdani who has stated as much many many times–but with a different government. Israel will still be a safe haven. And yes, I voted for, support and am genuinely excited that Mamdani is our new mayor. Are we, as Jews, not allowed to disagree with Bibi and what he’s doing with the settlements? Because every single one of my Israeli friends does and they constantly say NO IN MY NAME. Are we supposed to always believe the right-wing GOP rhetoric that’s being used against Mamdani?

In the future Jon of the UWS, please speak just for yourself–not “most Jewish people.” Because every single one of my Jewish friends voted for Mamdani and feels the way I do. And we’re all in our 50’s. It’s why he received a large percent of the Jewish vote in NYC.

If you truly believe in Israel’s right to exist then you are not anti-Zionist. You are anti Israel’s current government or political choices. Are you anti-America because of Trump? Or just disgusted with the current administration? It’s unbelievable how people toss around the word Zionist. It’s just a country! Every country has a right to exist. No one wants to get rid of other countries because they do bad things, just governments. Stop with the “we are not allowed to disagree with bibi” line. Most of my Jewish friends hate him like they hate trump. Nothing to do with Zionist or Jewish just a political opinion. And I still think Mamdani is not a friend of the Jews. Time will tell.

It’s possible to believe in Israel’s “right to exist” without believing it should be an ethnostate with tiers of citizenship based on religion or ethnicity or any factor a citizen cannot control by accident of birth or circumstance.

Father Mahoney you’re implying that because of Christians Jews have not been safe since the first century. Stating “since the first Good Friday around 30-33CE Jews have not been safe”. This is is clearly not based in history.

1. The Jews were under pagan Roman rule in the first century. And had been for quite some time. This was not the doing of the Christians.

2. The Jews had been exiled from their land by the Babylonians and Assyrians even much prior to this. Again having nothing to do with Christians.

3. In the first century it was the Christian Jews that were persecuted by the non Christian Jews not the other way around. Being that the Christian Jews had no political power. See the stoning to death of Stephen as a prime example.

Jewish since birth in the 50s, soon after Israel’s recognition as a country. I grew up feeling proud, glad that post WWII there was a “homeland”. I believe what I was taught. Sunday school, Hebrew school, confirmation class, etc. Then I grew up and learned to think for myself. I learned it was good to “question everything” – so I did. I stopped being a zionist because there was no longer a need. I strayed from religion as the answer to why the world exists. I had doubts about god’s existence, I still do. But as a news reporter for many years in NYC, Chicago and elsewhere I saw things that would open my eyes and my mind.
But the cruelty the IDF exhibited over the past few years has by far piqued my awareness that Israel has taken advantage of every ounce of sympathy anyone ever had for the Holocaust survivors. Because they perpetrated the same kind of cruelty on others. Something I had learned, as a child, Jewish people would NEVER, EVER do. Bibi Netanyahu has earned every bit of wrath he’s accrued. He’s lied to his people, he’s lied to American Jewry, he’s profited from his position – just like Trump. And he’s sold off land that’s not his to sell.
I find Mamdani a breath of fresh air. Give him the benefit of the doubt for reaching across all isles.
Today is a clan slate. He can do not worse than the past several mayors of NYC. Let’s see if he can do BETTER.

Your comment lI stopped being a zionist because there was no longer a need” reminded me of this:

Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote a powerful dissent in the 2013 Supreme Court case Shelby County v. Holder, which struck down a key provision of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Her dissent argued that the majority’s decision was “hubris” and compared it to “throwing away your umbrella in a rainstorm because you are not getting wet”

I agree with you that Netanyahu has compromised the world’s view of Israel but let’s not forget what led to the formation of a Jewish state in the first place.

Using the Hasidic community is not a good example — most of the ultra-Hasidic groups that endorsed him don’t even believe that the State of Israel exists, they believe that won’t happen until the coming of the Messiah.

As for the Jewish politicians that endorsed him – the facts are the facts. They did endorse him. For me (and this is just my opinion), I think too many of our politicians, both R and D, simply endorse whomever the candidate is because it is their duty to back the party candidate. I’d have to do some digging, but I don’t think there are many politicians out there in either party willing to buck the trend and speak out against the chose candidate (Liz Chaney is an example and look what the party did to her)

Some thing really appalling that De Blasio’s admin took care of, while Bloomberg didn’t: Massive construction disasters.

Murders during 2020-2021 did not reach Bloomberg era heights. You could be correct if you count muggings, which are certainly street crime.

Besides the massive construction disasters during the Bloomberg era, there were many more “small” construction disasters which almost always came from a building being torn down next to small building. Often, there were deaths, though not like the tower crane collapses.

I’m extremely happy to see West 80 Street between Columbus Avenue and Amsterdam Avenue “my block” “dark blue” 100 % Mamdani ‼️👍
I noticed because my database says the same and that W. 81st St. Columbus Avenue/Central Park West went “Cuomo”, not surprising because basically they’re a very older generation on that block comparing to W. 77th St. between Columbus Avenue and Central Park West, which is very liberal and democrat younger family people.

Very interesting story!

I always wanted to see the opposite side and what area they are from, now I know thank you WSR.

It helped that he was also the only one who set a positive tone for his campaign, as opposed to doom and gloom from the tomb and endless backbiting (you back out! no, you back out!). You wanna be a mayor, you gotta act like a mayor.

If the buses are free and prisons are abolished because, as he says, violence isn’t real, then the buses will be more crowded, less safe, and slower.

Please supply documentation for Mamdani saying he wanted to abolish prisons. Or else stop spouting nonsense.

How do you expect the buses to move faster and without a fare? Will the NYC traffic and MTA debt simply disappear because Mamdani is young and upbeat? I am a grown-up and do not believe in empty promises and fantasies. “Tax the rich” has a nice ring to it until they leave and it affects the NYC budget

What makes you think that he can actually keep his promise about buses, or that it will prove effective if he can? The MTA is a state-level agency; there’s no guarantee that they’ll do his bidding. And even if he can somehow find the funding to compensate for the lost revenue for bus fares, every analysis I’ve seen concludes that it’s unlikely to succeed since increased increased ridership will create a new set of challenges without funding to address them.

Absolutely, Mamdani’s better positions on street safety and public transportation sold me as well. Cuomo had no vision for NYC because he moved here five minutes ago

Speaking of street safety and elections, Gale Brewer won another term yesterday and still has not explained why she pulled her sponsorship from the daylighting bill instead of amending it to require the safer hardened daylighting recommended by the the DOT.

Unfortunately will still have to worry about the UWSers killed and injured by unsafe intersections that could be easily fixed.

If anything parked cars provide safer pedestrian refuge than big rocks which cause more problems than they solve.

Try peaking around a parked car when trying to cross the street, especially with a stroller – it’s very difficult. The rocks stop drivers from parking illegally and make it much easier to see incoming traffic.

They do not.
“Locations where hardened daylighting treatments were installed had, on average after installation, a pedestrian injury every 3.4 years. Without the treatment, they would have had a pedestrian injury every 2.3 years.
Locations where neckdowns were installed had, on average after installation, a pedestrian injury every 4.7 years. Without the treatment, they would have had a pedestrian injury every 1.4 years.”

No surprise Mamdani took north of 86th. The neighborhood takes a noticeable nosedive as soon as you walk above 86th St.

“Nosedive” is a strong term for north of 86th Street; I’d describe it as “transitional”…

I agree with you — I like on 72nd Street which, in my opinion, has gone downhill over the years (in terms of littered streets, garbage, loud nights, etc.). There are many blocks north of 86th Street I would happily move to.

Yes David Tepper moved out of NJ in 2015 to FL and made a bunch of headlines and then he quietly moved back in 2020.

Sorry to the haters but NYC is going to remain great, we just need to build more housing

Learn this: the City is overcrowded. Tourists come here and spend regardless of “our tax money.” Maybe you think America should send $40-billion to corrupt ranchers in Argentina, $40 million on golf for the fearless leader, millions and millions on Great Gatsby parties, millions and millions rebranding the Defense Department as the Department of War, renaming military installations back to failed, traitorous Confederate Generals’ names, and any of the other garbage the Administration is squandering while denying “socialist dreams” like food, healthcare, and transportation to the people of this nation. Are you aware Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill includes 100% tax deduction for the purchase of, and operation of, private jets? Economy 101 — if only one can read and one can think past the maga-inspired insults.

Mamdani and cuomo colluded to keep a republican out of office. Sliwa would have won if cuomo didn’t run. And cuomo knew and couldn’t stand for that being a dem. 🤷 facts.

Let’s realize that the NYC Democrats and the MAGAS voting for Cuomo are where there is ownership… coops and condos. I’m proud of the upper, upper west side where I work and my community, Washington Heights did the right thing.

Filled with some hope in these bleak and dark times we’re in.

I’m also truly upset with Sliwa who had my vote the last election. If Mamdani wasn’t running I would’ve gone with him. Anything but Cuomo…. and yet, even with Trump’s and Elon’s endorsements, rich Wall St and corporate types still voted for Cuomo. Astounding.

Congrats Mamdani!

Finally someone to directly call out the problem – “ownership”!

At least noone can say you’re being disingenuous! After all, only by abolishing private property and building cheap and hygienic dwellings can the housing problem be solved, right?

He’d be so proud.

While Mamdani was not MY candidate, I’m taking the ‘wait and see’ approach. Who knows? He might just be a boon to this city. Beats the salty ‘day after election’ tears. Try it, some of you might learn a new emotion.

Mamdani is already out here asking for more money from his voters – who voted for him because they want free shit – for his ‘transition’ campaign. Dude’s parents are rich – keep asking mommy and daddy to bankroll your endeavors.

Cuomo poured 10s of millions into his failure of a campaign from his billionaire donors who couldn’t care less about the average New Yorker (and probably holds some level of disdain, or disgust, towards them)

I’m not sure how to remind people of this, but when we pay our taxes (and I have for more than 50 years), we are supposed to get “free” things, because it’s what we pay for. Here’s what I don’t want to pay for: exploding Tesla and Space X rockets to nowhere, $40-billion to corrupt ranchers in Argentina, $40 million on golf for the fearless leader, millions and millions on Great Gatsby parties, millions and millions rebranding the Defense Department as the Department of War, millions on military (birthday) parades when it’s not the military’s birthday, renaming military installations back to failed, traitorous Confederate Generals’ names, and any of the other garbage the Administration is squandering our money on, while denying “socialist dreams” like food, healthcare, and transportation to the people of this nation. Are you aware Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill includes 100% tax deduction for the purchase of, and operation of, private jets? My mommy and daddy are deceased, so I’m glad there are other adults in the room who understand I am not a serf, a peasant, and indentured servant, or a slave who is here just to work to make the masters rich. It’s incredible how few people think about what they are writing about when they write it.
