Zohran Mamdani won the Upper West Side in the race for mayor on Tuesday night, according to a voter breakdown by The New York Times.
Mamdani secured 51 percent of the votes in the neighborhood in the General Election, compared to Andrew Cuomo’s 46 percent, The New York Times analysis shows. The Times defined the Upper West Side as around West 58th to 110th streets.
This is a major change from the Democratic Primary in June, when Cuomo won the Upper West Side by four points over Mamdani, meaning there was a nine-point swing toward the Queens assemblymember this November.
In part, it indicates that Upper West Siders who voted for Brad Lander in the Democratic primary, who secured 25 percent of the neighborhood vote in June, chose to back Mamdani over Cuomo.
There are also noticeable trends within the UWS voting breakdown depending on where in the neighborhood the ballots came from.
In general, Cuomo won the voting precincts in the southern portion of the neighborhood, from around West 59th to 86th Street, while Mamdani won more of the votes from West 87th to 110th streets.
Cuomo particularly dominated west of Broadway from 59th to 86th streets, and Central Park West from 59th to 67th streets. Mamdani’s strongest neighborhood pockets came east of Broadway from 87th to 110th streets, and he won all but two voting precincts from West 100th to 110th streets.
Returning to the Lander impact, you can see below that the Upper West Siders who voted for the city comptroller in June (purple squares), then switched their votes to Mamdani at a higher rate than they did to Cuomo.

While the Upper West Side trended toward Mamdani in the General Election when compared to the Democratic primary race, the Upper East Side only got stauncher in its support of Cuomo, according to The New York Times.
Cuomo won the Upper East Side by 24 percentage points on Tuesday night, compared to a 16 percent margin of victory in the June primary.
Overall, Mamdani won Manhattan in the General Election by 10 percentage points, the Times analysis shows.

We need to stop with the identity politics. Antisemitism has no place in elections. Mamdani was the only candidate proposing something – affordability.
By confiscating the rewards of the productive…shameful. Let the exodus begin.
Rent seeking is not “productive”. It is actually the opposite as it drains wealth from the economy.
Unfortunately all his policy’s will make it more unaffordable. Increase in property tax’s, increase MW, Increase income taxes, increase corporate tax. Rents will go up in check.
He can do nothing without City Council and the State, so relax.
He owns the lunatic city council. Proposals 2,3&4 are just what he needs
And sliwa didn’t propose safety? Oh cmon you are either deluded or intentionally lying!
Affordability reduces crime.
Deluded or intentionally lying is name calling. What did Sliwa propose with regard to safety?
It’s not as if we could choose to change our Jewish identity. We have never had that luxury. Most (not all, much to my surprise) Jewish people, including myself, have a serious problem with a leader who denies Israel’s right to exist as aJewish homeland, a safe haven against the oldest form of bigotry. Most Jewish people think that such Anti-Zionism is in fact antisemitism. So, one should be able to see, even if one disagrees, why the election of a self-professed, ardent anti-Zionist is a very big deal for most Jews. How could we be expected to support someone we are convinced has singled us out,, and not in a good way. 🙂
Yup and 1200 rabbis signed a letter calling him out. I guess they must be imagining things. Mamdani isn’t fooling anyone with his plausible deniability game except those wishing to be fooled, and its pretty amazing and sad that a city concerned with fighting every real or imagined “ism” in the world pretends not to hear his dog whistles. The whole country will be watching him and his friends now.
Here here Janice. Jon does not speak for all Jewish New Yorkers who grew up on the Upper West Side. I do not want to repeat what Janice says so eloquently. I just would ask all Jews to think about why a Muslim Mayoral candidate who supports Israeli’s right to exist and wants justice for Palestinians and an end to the theocratic reactionary government of Netanyahu has provoked such responses. Why are you holding on to an Israel that doesn’t exist anymore. Why do jews hold some special place when it comes to bigotry and hate? We are all in this together. So many people are hurting. It saddens me that people can’t see beyond their own tribe.
You realize you’re advocating for an apartheid state, and you’re also proving justification for those who’d ghettoize Jews outside of Israel?
Mamdani simply advocates that Israel treat all citizens equally, but that’s not how Israel operates, then there’s the illegal occupation of the West Bank.
I’m Jewish. And my Jewish maternal grandmother’s siblings and parents were murdered by Nazis in the holocaust. I was triggered and sickened by what happened on Oct. 7th (and still am) and loathe Hamas. I have friends and family in Israel and have visited many times. I’m not a member of Jews for Peace nor am I one of the Free Palestine protestors. And I am anti-Zionist. Because right now, Israel is a far-right theocracy. I believe in Israel’s right to exist–as does Mamdani who has stated as much many many times–but with a different government. Israel will still be a safe haven. And yes, I voted for, support and am genuinely excited that Mamdani is our new mayor. Are we, as Jews, not allowed to disagree with Bibi and what he’s doing with the settlements? Because every single one of my Israeli friends does and they constantly say NO IN MY NAME. Are we supposed to always believe the right-wing GOP rhetoric that’s being used against Mamdani?
In the future Jon of the UWS, please speak just for yourself–not “most Jewish people.” Because every single one of my Jewish friends voted for Mamdani and feels the way I do. And we’re all in our 50’s. It’s why he received a large percent of the Jewish vote in NYC.
If you truly believe in Israel’s right to exist then you are not anti-Zionist. You are anti Israel’s current government or political choices. Are you anti-America because of Trump? Or just disgusted with the current administration? It’s unbelievable how people toss around the word Zionist. It’s just a country! Every country has a right to exist. No one wants to get rid of other countries because they do bad things, just governments. Stop with the “we are not allowed to disagree with bibi” line. Most of my Jewish friends hate him like they hate trump. Nothing to do with Zionist or Jewish just a political opinion. And I still think Mamdani is not a friend of the Jews. Time will tell.
It’s possible to believe in Israel’s “right to exist” without believing it should be an ethnostate with tiers of citizenship based on religion or ethnicity or any factor a citizen cannot control by accident of birth or circumstance.
But other ethnostates are ok? Thought so.
Here here! Also, NYC is not located in Israel last I checked, so this really should have no bearing on who we elect as mayor
I was responding to someone’s comment. Who said I voted on it? But anti semitism IS relevant to this state. Last I checked.
And I was responding to Christof.
You’ll be happy to hear that our new mayor has been clear there is no room for anti semitism in NYC.
Thank you so much for sharing this, Janice. Equating opposition to the Netanyahu regime with antisemitism or hatred if Israel is utterly preposterous.
Do Jews in UWS not feel safe in this neighborhood? Is Israel really (the only) safe haven?
literally, Jews don’t feel safe in any neighborhood living in one or just passing through one, it’s been that way since the first Good Friday around 30-33 CE and always will be!🙏 it’s quite obvious.
Father Mahoney you’re implying that because of Christians Jews have not been safe since the first century. Stating “since the first Good Friday around 30-33CE Jews have not been safe”. This is is clearly not based in history.
1. The Jews were under pagan Roman rule in the first century. And had been for quite some time. This was not the doing of the Christians.
2. The Jews had been exiled from their land by the Babylonians and Assyrians even much prior to this. Again having nothing to do with Christians.
3. In the first century it was the Christian Jews that were persecuted by the non Christian Jews not the other way around. Being that the Christian Jews had no political power. See the stoning to death of Stephen as a prime example.
I’d worry more about keeping this country a safe place for Jews before Israel. Nick Fuentes types are the future of Gen Z and Gen Alpha right wing politics in the post-Trump era
I’d be more afraid if the left wingers on the college campuses like Columbia
But Nick Fuentes didnt become NYC mayor
Mamdani’s win will reverberate across the country. This is for more than just NYC
A Democrat won in a majority Democrat city ..wow..that’s never happened before.
Jewish since birth in the 50s, soon after Israel’s recognition as a country. I grew up feeling proud, glad that post WWII there was a “homeland”. I believe what I was taught. Sunday school, Hebrew school, confirmation class, etc. Then I grew up and learned to think for myself. I learned it was good to “question everything” – so I did. I stopped being a zionist because there was no longer a need. I strayed from religion as the answer to why the world exists. I had doubts about god’s existence, I still do. But as a news reporter for many years in NYC, Chicago and elsewhere I saw things that would open my eyes and my mind.
But the cruelty the IDF exhibited over the past few years has by far piqued my awareness that Israel has taken advantage of every ounce of sympathy anyone ever had for the Holocaust survivors. Because they perpetrated the same kind of cruelty on others. Something I had learned, as a child, Jewish people would NEVER, EVER do. Bibi Netanyahu has earned every bit of wrath he’s accrued. He’s lied to his people, he’s lied to American Jewry, he’s profited from his position – just like Trump. And he’s sold off land that’s not his to sell.
I find Mamdani a breath of fresh air. Give him the benefit of the doubt for reaching across all isles.
Today is a clan slate. He can do not worse than the past several mayors of NYC. Let’s see if he can do BETTER.
What does the holocaust have to do with the behavior of the IDF? What incredibly faulty logic. Do you hear yourself?
You are angry at the IDF so it’s ok to vote for someone who is anti the whole country of Israel?
How is Mamdani saying that Israel should be for all citizens anti-Israel?
Your comment lI stopped being a zionist because there was no longer a need” reminded me of this:
Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote a powerful dissent in the 2013 Supreme Court case Shelby County v. Holder, which struck down a key provision of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Her dissent argued that the majority’s decision was “hubris” and compared it to “throwing away your umbrella in a rainstorm because you are not getting wet”
I agree with you that Netanyahu has compromised the world’s view of Israel but let’s not forget what led to the formation of a Jewish state in the first place.
Thank you!
Agreed! But the people of NYC just voted for a proudly open anti-Semite. So now what? We should stay silent?
Why oh why is a lie like this permitted on this board?!
How can you tell someone that this is A LIE. what arrogance. Do you tell black people they’re imagining it too? Do you tell native Americans to buck up and stop complaining? I’m so sick of this. Let people speak up and say what they see and feel without silencing them by claiming there is fact and lie. There’s PLENTY of evidence indicating he is not supportive of Jews or Zionists. Enough already.
I am hearing a lot of people confidently state that he is an anti semite without providing any supporting evidence. Of course, you’ve just moved the goal posts to “not supportive”, whatever that means…
[citation required]
Yup, he must be the most repeatedly antisemitism-denouncing antisemite one will ever find, except perhaps in the White House. You needn’t stay silent, but it’s best to stick to the facts.
That’s not true. Look at all the Jewish politicians and groups who chose to endorse him. The Hasidic community of New York City publicly endorsed him 2 days before the election.
2 fringe Hasidic rabbis endorsed him. Virtually 90% of orthodox and Hasidic Jews did not vote for Mamdani.
I take no stand on how any group votes but I am interested in facts and cirrect information.
Have you looked at the Brooklyn results, specifically Williamsburg?
https://forward.com/fast-forward/779920/satmar-mamdani-nyc-mayor-election-endorsement/
Using the Hasidic community is not a good example — most of the ultra-Hasidic groups that endorsed him don’t even believe that the State of Israel exists, they believe that won’t happen until the coming of the Messiah.
As for the Jewish politicians that endorsed him – the facts are the facts. They did endorse him. For me (and this is just my opinion), I think too many of our politicians, both R and D, simply endorse whomever the candidate is because it is their duty to back the party candidate. I’d have to do some digging, but I don’t think there are many politicians out there in either party willing to buck the trend and speak out against the chose candidate (Liz Chaney is an example and look what the party did to her)
So what if they voted for him? There are a lot of people who like to conveniently shed their Jewishness when it serves them. Or have other political reasons for voting for him.
Fake news, he’s not an anti-semite and was endorsed by many Jewish New Yorkers like Brad Lander. Please point us to anything that supports your claim.
Brad Lander is not representative of all Jews.
And you are representative of all Jews? What chutzpah!
Obviously! That’s why I didn’t say he was.
Agree with him or not, Mamdani is not an anti semite
Now what? How about we start by correcting your false statement and stating the truth: Mamdani is NOT a proudly open anti-semite! Disagreeing with your political view vis a vis Israel does not automatically make someone a racist. Sad that you think that.
Would him putting on his own campaign site that he wants to shift taxes to “richer and whiter” neighborhoods convince you?
What does that have to do with religion? Richer neighborhoods SHOULD have higher property taxes than poor neighborhoods!
Aka a map of where all the rich folk live
Yes, Claire, and also where frightened Zionists live. I hope that over time they can begin to feel more safe and pay less attention to all the right wing propaganda being spewed about Israel. Let’s keep our eye on our beloved NYC. I’m excited about what is possible- substantive change-with this new, ambitious leader.
Well, there goes the neighborhood. NYC is getting exactly what it voted for. I never dreamed it could get worse than DeBlasio, but I suspect we’re in for a rough ride.
You can always move to Miami 🙂
And you can always move to Portland, sweetheart. I hear it’s wonderful.
Please stop telling people to move. Just stop.
Street crime went down under De Blasio.
I guess it ticked up during covid, but not to late Bloomberg levels.
Some thing really appalling that De Blasio’s admin took care of, while Bloomberg didn’t: Massive construction disasters.
That’s partially incorrect. Murders and shootings were higher during covid than any point during bloombergs time.
Murders during 2020-2021 did not reach Bloomberg era heights. You could be correct if you count muggings, which are certainly street crime.
Besides the massive construction disasters during the Bloomberg era, there were many more “small” construction disasters which almost always came from a building being torn down next to small building. Often, there were deaths, though not like the tower crane collapses.
In the same way that as an American, I feel out of place in a country led by Trump, I feel out of place in a New York City led by Mamdani.
Whither now?
Mamdani is worse than Trump.
No one’s saying you have to stay!
He hasn’t even been mayor for a day… get a grip, he’s chill
I am so tired of zoomers.
Did you vote for Trump’s preferred candidate? Seems you fit in very well in Trump’s America. But you fit in here too—Mamdani will be a mayor for all, even those who disagree with him.
Mayor for all? That’s laughable
Don’t blame me. I voted for Adams.
Don’t blame me, I voted for Kathryn Garcia — who would have cruised to an easy re-election yesterday if she won four years ago. Instead we got Eric Adams and Mamdani, dreck.
I think about this all the time….how did we not elect Kathryn Garcia!!
It is sad
If only we had Kathryn Garcia the last four years! Huge missed opportunity
Yea. It’s a shame she didn’t run.
Thanks Boss. Thanks a lot.
I was wondering, what kind of people would vote for Adams when he’s not even running, weird 🤪 you’re vote didn’t go anywhere, but in the trash👎
Says the dude who’s love of his life is a dog 😂 too dysgenic to find someone? Or maybe they’re off put by all your political griping on fb.
The kind of person who thinks NYC is doing great and who doesn’t listen to the doomsayers on the left or right. Cuomo is a loathsome human being. Mamdani is a joke, but unlike my friend Great Scott, I do not think he is a dangerous joke. Adams did a decent job. Not the best we’ve ever had. I’m sick of people running our city down. Adam’s deserved a second term more than any of these jokers deserved a first.
Are you referring to Scott Stringer? The Cuomo crowd Democrats had no intention of supporting him because relatively speaking he’s been among the truest to his constituents… I went to HS with him when he was a resident of Washington Heights where I am still.
You should join Dino 🤣‼️

I’m extremely happy to see West 80 Street between Columbus Avenue and Amsterdam Avenue “my block” “dark blue” 100 % Mamdani ‼️👍
I noticed because my database says the same and that W. 81st St. Columbus Avenue/Central Park West went “Cuomo”, not surprising because basically they’re a very older generation on that block comparing to W. 77th St. between Columbus Avenue and Central Park West, which is very liberal and democrat younger family people.
Very interesting story!
I always wanted to see the opposite side and what area they are from, now I know thank you WSR.
So proud that the youth vote who can no longer afford to live in this city has taken it back. Good for them, well done!
They do live in the city and on the UWS of all places. How else did they vote? You are contradicting yourself. There will always be places that are not affordable for absolutely everyone. Otherwise, we will find ourselves in the USSR.
Just leave if you cant afford living here. Enough with the whining from the poor people.
New York is built on poor people coming here for a better life. My ancestors and likely yours included. If you want a gated community, there’s an island off the coast of Florida for you.
Urbanists will push for a de facto gated community.
👎 👎
Unqualified trumps odious.
Street improvements that make pedestrians safer and buses move faster were my two key issues. Mamdani was the only candidate who spoke credibly about my concerns. It helped that he was also the only one who set a positive tone for his campaign, as opposed to doom and gloom from the tomb and endless backbiting (you back out! no, you back out!). You wanna be a mayor, you gotta act like a mayor.
If the buses are free and prisons are abolished because, as he says, violence isn’t real, then the buses will be more crowded, less safe, and slower.
Please supply documentation for Mamdani saying he wanted to abolish prisons. Or else stop spouting nonsense.
How do you expect the buses to move faster and without a fare? Will the NYC traffic and MTA debt simply disappear because Mamdani is young and upbeat? I am a grown-up and do not believe in empty promises and fantasies. “Tax the rich” has a nice ring to it until they leave and it affects the NYC budget
What makes you think that he can actually keep his promise about buses, or that it will prove effective if he can? The MTA is a state-level agency; there’s no guarantee that they’ll do his bidding. And even if he can somehow find the funding to compensate for the lost revenue for bus fares, every analysis I’ve seen concludes that it’s unlikely to succeed since increased increased ridership will create a new set of challenges without funding to address them.
Excited to see the new projects to make our sidewalks livelier, safer, and work better for New Yorkers. Lots to be excited for
Absolutely, Mamdani’s better positions on street safety and public transportation sold me as well. Cuomo had no vision for NYC because he moved here five minutes ago
All I saw him do was park his mid life crisis mobiles illegally
Speaking of street safety and elections, Gale Brewer won another term yesterday and still has not explained why she pulled her sponsorship from the daylighting bill instead of amending it to require the safer hardened daylighting recommended by the the DOT.
She’s the Worst! Hopeless !
LOL you expect Gale Brewer to actually do something or take a stand on an issue? You must be new here.
Because she does not have to worry about Open Plans and TransAlt anymore.
Unfortunately will still have to worry about the UWSers killed and injured by unsafe intersections that could be easily fixed.
If anything parked cars provide safer pedestrian refuge than big rocks which cause more problems than they solve.
Try peaking around a parked car when trying to cross the street, especially with a stroller – it’s very difficult. The rocks stop drivers from parking illegally and make it much easier to see incoming traffic.
It is not very difficult.
I very much doubt you’ve spent any time pushing a stroller on the UWS then
They do not.
“Locations where hardened daylighting treatments were installed had, on average after installation, a pedestrian injury every 3.4 years. Without the treatment, they would have had a pedestrian injury every 2.3 years.
Locations where neckdowns were installed had, on average after installation, a pedestrian injury every 4.7 years. Without the treatment, they would have had a pedestrian injury every 1.4 years.”
https://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/downloads/pdf/daylighting-and-street-safety.pdf
No surprise Mamdani took north of 86th. The neighborhood takes a noticeable nosedive as soon as you walk above 86th St.
“Nosedive” is a strong term for north of 86th Street; I’d describe it as “transitional”…
UES calling your name
What about it is a “nosedive”, and what are you alluding to here…?
It’s time for Dino to: “We’re moving on up, to the East side, to a deluxe apartment in the sky.” LOL‼️
The Jeffersons! ✔️
Are you a snob??
It’s great above 86!!
Seriously?
Some might claim the opposite…sounds like the Upper East Side might be a better fit for you, based on this election map.
I agree with you — I like on 72nd Street which, in my opinion, has gone downhill over the years (in terms of littered streets, garbage, loud nights, etc.). There are many blocks north of 86th Street I would happily move to.
For all the people mentioning leaving the city over this, by all means please do so we can bring the vacancy rate up from the dangerous 1.5% that it’s at now.
Didn’t one billionaire move out of New Jersey and imperil the entire state budget because of it?
Yes David Tepper moved out of NJ in 2015 to FL and made a bunch of headlines and then he quietly moved back in 2020.
Sorry to the haters but NYC is going to remain great, we just need to build more housing
When transplants stop coming, that is when the business elites will really worry
good luck financing your socialist dream without our tax money then. also, open an economy 101 book to learn things.
Learn this: the City is overcrowded. Tourists come here and spend regardless of “our tax money.” Maybe you think America should send $40-billion to corrupt ranchers in Argentina, $40 million on golf for the fearless leader, millions and millions on Great Gatsby parties, millions and millions rebranding the Defense Department as the Department of War, renaming military installations back to failed, traitorous Confederate Generals’ names, and any of the other garbage the Administration is squandering while denying “socialist dreams” like food, healthcare, and transportation to the people of this nation. Are you aware Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill includes 100% tax deduction for the purchase of, and operation of, private jets? Economy 101 — if only one can read and one can think past the maga-inspired insults.
What a strange unrelated and irrelevant response to my comment. What Trump wrongly does on the federal government level has nothing to do with my opinion on local taxation and city government.
Mamdani and cuomo colluded to keep a republican out of office. Sliwa would have won if cuomo didn’t run. And cuomo knew and couldn’t stand for that being a dem. 🤷 facts.
Sliwa got 7% of the vote. The delusion runs deep.
Except not a single metric supports that inane claim.
Sliwa would have won had he been the only candidate. Possibly.
LOL ! 🤪
Funniest comment all day
New York City, obviously is a country in itself and should be separated from the union.
Let’s realize that the NYC Democrats and the MAGAS voting for Cuomo are where there is ownership… coops and condos. I’m proud of the upper, upper west side where I work and my community, Washington Heights did the right thing.
Filled with some hope in these bleak and dark times we’re in.
I’m also truly upset with Sliwa who had my vote the last election. If Mamdani wasn’t running I would’ve gone with him. Anything but Cuomo…. and yet, even with Trump’s and Elon’s endorsements, rich Wall St and corporate types still voted for Cuomo. Astounding.
Congrats Mamdani!
Finally someone to directly call out the problem – “ownership”!
At least noone can say you’re being disingenuous! After all, only by abolishing private property and building cheap and hygienic dwellings can the housing problem be solved, right?
He’d be so proud.
While Mamdani was not MY candidate, I’m taking the ‘wait and see’ approach. Who knows? He might just be a boon to this city. Beats the salty ‘day after election’ tears. Try it, some of you might learn a new emotion.
Mamdani is already out here asking for more money from his voters – who voted for him because they want free shit – for his ‘transition’ campaign. Dude’s parents are rich – keep asking mommy and daddy to bankroll your endeavors.
Cuomo poured 10s of millions into his failure of a campaign from his billionaire donors who couldn’t care less about the average New Yorker (and probably holds some level of disdain, or disgust, towards them)
I’m not sure how to remind people of this, but when we pay our taxes (and I have for more than 50 years), we are supposed to get “free” things, because it’s what we pay for. Here’s what I don’t want to pay for: exploding Tesla and Space X rockets to nowhere, $40-billion to corrupt ranchers in Argentina, $40 million on golf for the fearless leader, millions and millions on Great Gatsby parties, millions and millions rebranding the Defense Department as the Department of War, millions on military (birthday) parades when it’s not the military’s birthday, renaming military installations back to failed, traitorous Confederate Generals’ names, and any of the other garbage the Administration is squandering our money on, while denying “socialist dreams” like food, healthcare, and transportation to the people of this nation. Are you aware Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill includes 100% tax deduction for the purchase of, and operation of, private jets? My mommy and daddy are deceased, so I’m glad there are other adults in the room who understand I am not a serf, a peasant, and indentured servant, or a slave who is here just to work to make the masters rich. It’s incredible how few people think about what they are writing about when they write it.
I promise you your local taxes aren’t paying for any of those things.
Urbanists want people like me to be serfs! You can’t trust Democrats either
Urbanists just want you to take the train Eugene, its not that hard.
