In an Age of A.I., Calhoun Focuses on What Can’t Be Replicated: Intellectual Authenticity

In a time when artificial intelligence is changing everything from how we work to how we write, one Upper West Side school is focusing on what can’t be replicated by a machine: human curiosity, creativity, and integrity.

At The Calhoun School, those qualities come together in intellectual authenticity—a mix of self-awareness, discernment, and the confidence to think and act with purpose. It’s a defining trait of Calhoun students, and one that prepares them not just for college, but for the world they’re stepping into.

In all of Calhoun’s classrooms, inquiry drives everything. Students are encouraged to ask questions, debate ideas, and pursue projects that connect to their interests. The focus is on learning how to think, not just what to think.

That approach comes to life in Calhoun’s Junior Workshop, a unique capstone experience in which every eleventh grader designs an independent project that brings something new into the world. There’s no set formula, and no single right answer, but along the way, students learn to manage their time and build something entirely their own—skills that translate directly to real-world problem-solving.

“The confidence I gained from doing this project is something I will value for a long time,” says one Calhoun alum. “My communication, problem solving, time management, and self-accountability skills all grew tremendously through [Junior Workshop], and I will continue to use those skills in the future.”

By the time they’re ready for college, Calhoun students know who they are and how to express it. That authenticity shines through in their college applications. Calhoun graduates go on to thrive at a wide range of colleges and universities, from large research institutions to small liberal arts schools. But what truly sets them apart is the mindset they bring with them: curiosity, adaptability, and a commitment to thinking for themselves.

As artificial intelligence reshapes the world, Calhoun’s emphasis on intellectual authenticity feels especially relevant. The school’s progressive approach gives students the tools to navigate ambiguity and create meaning in their learning. It’s a place where students discover who they are, and where they want to go next.
