Zurutto, the Japanese ramen restaurant at 142 West 72nd Street (between Columbus and Amsterdam), which closed in August due to high rent, began temporarily operating out of Dark Bullet Sake & Oyster Bar, at 154 West 72nd Street, on November 8th. Zurutto, Dark Bullet, and Tenzan, (at 285 Columbus Avenue), are all under the same ownership. The owners are searching for a permanent new home for Zurutto in the neighborhood, a representative told West Side Rag on a phone call. Until then, it will operate out of Dark Bullet with an abbreviated menu. The restaurant will continue to serve ramen dishes but will have fewer appetizer options, the representative said.

Cocina Consuelo, a Mexican restaurant, is expected to open at 224 West 104th Street (between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenues), in December. This will be the second location for the restaurant, which was founded by husband-and-wife team Lalo Rodriguez and Karina Garcia during the pandemic as a “take-out” venture from their Harlem apartment. Both had prior restaurant backgrounds, Eater reported; Garcia at Eleven Madison Park and Rodriguez at Cosme. The couple began by selling homemade “birria tacos,” and eventually established a “supper club” in their home, offering tasting menus inspired by recipes from Rodriguez’s grandmother. They subsequently sold their dishes at various popups throughout the city, and at Smorgasburg. Rodriguez and Garcia opened their first brick-and-mortar restaurant at 130 Hamilton Place (at West 143rd Street), in August 2024. The Infatuation described it as a “New York love song,” adding that “you’ll find a surplus of unexpected moments at this tiny restaurant in Hamilton Heights, which rolls over with music, laughter, and the smell of good cooking.”
“Consuelo” means “to comfort or to console,” Garcia told West Side Rag on a phone call. “The name was just a fit with what we were trying to do, create community in a time of uncertainty,” she said. Coincidentally, both Rodriguez’s grandmother (who passed away in 2019), and Garcia’s grandfather were named Consuelo. “The name adds complexity to our story and more depth to what we’re doing here at Cocina Consuelo,” she said. The menu will be similar to the original location, Garcia said, and will be largely gluten free. “The masa pancake is a favorite,” she added. Malaysia Grill which closed in 2024 was previously in the space.

Carina Hildebrandt, a women’s and men’s clothing store selling knitwear handcrafted in Peru, opened on November 17th at 113 West 78th Street (between Columbus and Amsterdam Avenues). The shop sells sweaters, coats, metallic knits, dresses, vests, skirts, pants and tops. It also sells accessories such as hats, gloves and scarves. Designer Carina Hildebrandt uses fabrics such as baby alpaca, organic cotton, and metallics. “I strive to create pieces with an effortless, understated, elegant look,” she told West Side Rag on a phone call. “Our pieces range from elevated casual to evening wear. Everything is ethically made and comfortable.” Hildebrandt grew up in Hong Kong, started her business in England, and owns a shop in Aspen, Colorado. She discovered the Upper West Side in 2009 when stopping in NYC before flying to her workshop in Peru. She fell in love with the neighborhood, and held a number of private trunk shows here. ”I am thrilled to be back in NYC, and so happy to get back to the Upper West Side.” she said. Store visits are currently by appointment, and can be booked here. Hildebrandt plans to eventually hold regular store hours. The space was previously Midtown Physical Therapy which closed its UWS location in October 2024.

The George at Columbia, a new hotel, officially opened on November 18th at 412 West 126th Street (at Morningside Avenue). The hotel had a “soft opening” on October 8th. “The Columbia market is very important to this hotel,” a representative wrote to West Side Rag in an email. “The hotel intends to further develop unique opportunities for Columbia’s students, alumni, faculty, staff, and visiting special guests.” The hotel has 139 guest rooms, a terrace lounge, lobby bar, and fitness center. Plans to open an outdoor pool, and two full service restaurants in the summer of 2026 are in the works. “The George will serve as a property inviting global visitors to engage in Harlem’s unique energy while providing local residents with a welcoming place of gathering and pride,” a press release states. The hotel is named after both George “Shorty George” Snowden, the Harlem dance legend, and King George II, who chartered Columbia as King’s College in 1754.
The Openings & Closings column wouldn’t be possible without our many tipsters: thank you! Anyone can send tips about openings and closings in the neighborhood to info@westsiderag.com.

I’d love a Japanese restaurant at Lincoln Center, as we have so many available spots, but apparently the rents are too high even for Duane Reade (which left because of high rent) and Best Buy (ditto), and It’s Sugar (ditto). It’s ridiculous. We already have several banks, which seem like the only places which can afford it. We need more bars and restaurants. And when is Wegman’s opening!?
Don’t forget Daniel Boulud’s super bistro concept coming soon.
The city should Jus seize all the commercial space in the Lincoln center area and convert it to housing. Best Buy and Century 21 could make about 400 micro apartments for our new arrivals. Or a new city run Grocery store in the Century 21 property. Zohran can make Lincoln center the center of his socialist policy’s.
What a terrible idea! Hopefully it is in jest!
Century 21 space has been leased by the city to be used as a school. Best Buy space is mostly below ground. What type of micro apartments would work there?
That will be worse then a city grocery store!
You’re never ever ever going to see one of those socialist grocery stores on the UWS. And I have philharmonic tickets, go build whatever you want somewhere else.
We are so thrilled about Cocina Consuelo coming to the neighborhood! The food there is delicious, and we can’t wait to support it. Now we won’t have to make the trip uptown to eat there.
Delicious food and lovely staff! Can’t wait.
Will check out the new clothing shop. Happy to see unique boutiques reappearing. Hopefully it’s not Madison Ave pricing though!
If the store is invitation only, and the other store location is in Aspen, I guarantee you it’s not cheap.
We need a japanese restaurant in the bway 80’s corridor
It’s a block east on Amsterdam, but one of the city’s best omakase counters is Takeda (between 87th and 88th). Spendy, but worth it!
There’s also Namakaze Sushi on 84th and B’way, which I think is part of Five Napkin Burger. I haven’t been, but… it’s there.
I wouldn’t mind seeing more places, either!
The rents for commercial spaces on 72nd St. have become so high since the Real Estate taxes have shot up for the small multi-use buildings on the block. Most of the buildings are paying between 120k to 200k in annual real estate taxes and NY raises the taxes every year 8% or more. The restaurants usually have to pay 40 to 50% of the increase and its become unsustainable for the small landlords and the restaurants.
The rents are high but made worse by the fact that building owners divide their property tax bill by the amount of commercial spaces and add it to the rent, so the businesses pay the taxes on the whole building and the landlord gets rich.
No worries. When Mamdani becomes mayor he will raise taxes even more!
And the new Mayor wants to raise taxes because the UWS is considered to be a white neighborhood
Wowww, beyond excited for Cocina Consuelo coming to Manhattan Valley, WELCOME! Delicious food and vibes!
There is a new store Deal Depot that looks like maybe a five and dime being built next to The Throwback on Amsterdam and 95th.
So so so SO BEYOND thrilled about Cocina Consuelo! This is the best news in a long time! That space is so sweet and needs a great tenant! I will be waiting on line to support them!
There should be no problem for businesses ” to find space,” since there are endless empty storefronts.
The Columbia is nice, but it is in Central Harlem not Morningside Heights near Columbia University. But better than nothing as there are no hotels in Morningside Heights or West Harlem. There was supposed to be a hotel/apartment building built on the northeast corner of W125th and Broadway, but looks like that project died.
There is Aloft Harlem, on Frederick Douglass between 123rd/124th!
Also not Morningside Heights.
There’s also the Greater Harlem Sobering Up Center, 419 West 126th Street, where I spent many a night…
That is pretty cool about the hotel near Columbia. Also. Does anyone know what is happening at the old Food Emporium space on 90th? I know there is work going on there
I am SO excited to have Zurutto partly re-opening down the block. I was happily spending a lot of time and money and there, and glad to as long as they are in such a convenient location with such great food.
Given the difficulty finding a good tenant, I hope they can re-occupy their old space. The real estate and commercial rent taxes are just killing things.
SO excited about Cocina Consuelo opening! We need a good neighborhood spot with creative, slighly elevated offerings near us (we’re in the 90’s where that level of food is lacking). Looking forward to supporting it!
Consuelo: masculine. Consuela: feminine. I look forward to this restaurant. They seem to have some real cooking chops. Probably be a nice place to pre-game before a show at Miller Theater…that is, if there aren’t any protests.
Delighted to hear that Kelly Ripa and Marc Consuelos are opening a restaurant – I love them on TV – they are the cutest couple – hopefully Marc will be tending bar!
No connection to morning TV’s “Kelly and Mark”. The restaurant is named in honor of both Karina Garcia‘s grandfather and Lalo Rodriguez’s grandmother.
So excited about Casa Consuelo! Real Mexican food and also gluten free! Get ready to take my money.
Six comments about a Mexican restaurant that hasn’t even opened yet — I smell publicists in the comment section.
