Tsumo Omakase, a Japanese restaurant, opened on December 13th at 782 Amsterdam (between West 98th and 99th streets). This is Tsumo’s second location – the first is in Kips Bay – but the restaurant’s ownership initially had their sights on the Upper West Side. “The Upper West Side has always been a dream location for us because we love its vibrant restaurant scene, particularly along Amsterdam Avenue, where there are more niche mom-and-pop shops,” Linda Wang, founder of Ume Hospitality Group, wrote in a message to WSR. “It just feels like the right environment for our concept.” Tsumo’s set menu offers an 11-course lunch ($48 per person) and a 13-course dinner ($58 per person). The space used to be Broadway Pest Services, which relocated to 69 Saint Nicholas Avenue at 114th Street in April. (Thanks to Scott, Stefanie, Amy, and Karyn for the tips.)
Six60One, a kosher grocery store, is planning to open on January 7th at 661 Amsterdam between West 92nd and 93rd streets. The large market will have a deli, bakery, and butcher, plus pizza, sushi, and catering. The new market is under the same ownership as The Market Place, an upscale kosher grocer in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Previously the space was Seasons, a kosher supermarket that closed in December 2018. (Thanks to Beth for the tip.)
Cafe Metro at 2062 Broadway (West 71st Street), which opened in 2019, has closed. “We have made the difficult decision to permanently close our doors,” reads a sign posted on the storefront. “We thank you for your patronage for the last 5 years.” A representative contacted by WSR declined to provide additional information. The nearest location is Metro Marché at 30 West 57th Street. (Thanks to MH and Marty for the tips.)
The Krispy Kreme doughnut shop at 2563 Broadway (corner of West 96th Street), which opened this location in 2020, has closed. The retail space already has a new tenant: Made in New York Pizza. This will be the pizza chain’s fifth location, two of which are on the Upper West Side (at West 73rd Street and West 80th Street). The plan is to open in March, a representative confirmed with the Rag. (Thanks to Shea and Meg for the tips.)
A-Ves, a Chinese restaurant at 102 West 86th Street (between Columbus and Amsterdam), is now open for dinner seven days a week from 5:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The name “Aves” means “birds” and reflects the restaurant’s “deep connection to this majestic creature,” according to the company’s website. “Our restaurant embodies the elegance of the peacock with an ambiance that seamlessly blends timeless sophistication with modern chic.” The restaurant is decorated with “peacock-inspired” decor. They serve dim sum and a variety of traditional Chinese dishes. Owner Leon Liu has 10 years of experience in the restaurant industry, including Tangy Noodle in Chelsea. The space was formerly La Mirabelle, the French restaurant that closed in 2021. (Thanks to Melissa for the tip.)
ICYMI: Hashi Market, a Japanese grocer, has signage up and is planning to open at 2780 Broadway (between West 107th and 108th streets). Hashi Market bills itself as a “fresh food supermarket, mini department store, and catering service.” In Japanese, “hashi” can mean chopsticks or bridge. It replaces Garden of Eden, which closed its longtime UWS supermarket in March of 2024, after the owner decided not to renew their lease.
The Openings & Closings column wouldn’t be possible without our many tipsters: thank you! Anyone can send tips about openings and closings in the neighborhood to info@westsiderag.com.

The thing I loved most about Garden of Eden was the 50% discount after 8pm on their great prepared foods bar. Now it looks like their replacement will do the same! (That is, assuming they use the same policy as their Tribeca location has)
Is ssix sixty one definitely opening? Because that signage has been there for a long long time. Exciting though.
Metro Cafe – wasn’t that a hot and crusty for awhile, years before? Then that closed and another coffee-shop like place opened, then Metro Cafe? I wonder if another place will move in
And Whyyygyyyyt is Krispy Kreme closing? Good for my tummy but damn, they are good. I am honestly surprised as business seems to be booming.
I love Krispy Kreme. Does anyone know where they are reopening and if they are?
Yes, it WAS Hot and Crusty, for quite a while!
And before that, Bagel Nosh. Those of us in the neighborhood since at least 1988 may fondly recall it.
It’s too bad that the omakase place that just opened around the corner from me serves only these two menus which are Way Beyond my budget. I would go often for a Japanese sushi lunch but unfortunately my purse doesn’t permit me to do this here. Too bad…it’s just too upscale for some of us.
That’s why it’s OMAKASE- specialty
Not sure what “vibrant Amsterdam Avenue restaurant scene ” is located in upper 90’s .. it’s a wasteland ..
Yes to Hashi Market! So happy to have a grocery store in that location again. I can’t stand Gristedes, and the aisles in Westside Market are so unpleasantly narrow.
Happy to live in a place that doesn’t support a Krispy Kreme.
I would rather have Krispy Kreme than a store illegally selling narcotics any day.
Unhappy to live in a place with narrow-minded people that root for companies to fail. It is sad how many people spend their lives looking for reasons to be offended. And it is this type of attitude that makes us all look crazy and is how Trump won…
Hopefully Chik-fil-a is next.
Keep up the good work.
I would rather have Krispy Kreme, which is convenient for the occasional “bring donuts to work” than _another_ pizza place.
why?
There’s already another pizza place across the street–L aVera
Because that’s middle America garbage food.
We definitely need a place like Metro Cafe in this immediate neighborhood. Several similar places have closed. Nowhere to get a quick breakfast or lunch entree anymore around 72 and Broadway. But alas, Metro Cafe’s food was always very disappointing so it’s not surprising they couldn’t make it. It wasn’t the concept. It was the execution that did them in.
For breakfast items, you have two very good choices in that area — Utopia Diner and Viand. Not grab and go, but very good food at a good price. not quite as fast, but better quality. Also, great for lunch and dinner as well. Both are important resources for the neighborhood!!!
A couple of weeks ago I went into Metro Cafe for a croissant and a coffee. It was rancid and chewy and expensive too. They also had no sugar only sugar substitutes. I brought the croissant back to the manager and told him it was inedible. He smelled it and agreed and gave me cash back for it. What a dive!
A McDonalds is opening at the southwest corner of 125th and Broadway.
Is it in the high rise that replaced the McDonald’s that used to be there?
Yes. A Columbia graduate apartment building.
“Aves” means “birds,” alright, but in Spanish, not Chinese, so I wonder what exactly is this place going to be.
The story covers exactly what the restaurant is going to be.
Nothing wrong with a good coffee and donut place.
I liked Krispy Kreme. It was certainly better than Dunkin.
