A 51-year-old man was found hanging from a tree in Riverside Park near 91st Street early on Thursday. Police were called at 7:37 a.m., according to a spokesman, and the man was pronounced dead on arrival.
The spokesman called it an apparent suicide, though it remains under investigation and the medical examiner will determine cause of death.
A passerby told us the man appeared to be in a crab apple grove in the park. The area was closed off after the body was found.
The man was not identified.
If you are thinking about harming yourself or attempting suicide please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
Clarification: The man’s body was found closer to 91st than to 95th street. We’ve updated the story.
Because I cannot say everything I am thinking and feeling, I will just say that I am deeply saddened.
How utterly sad.
It’s painful that he picked a beautiful spot like that to end his life.
I would say it’s painful that he chose to end his life.
Picking a beautiful spot isn’t the painful part.
Mark- exactly.
51-year-old, sharp, but not identified?
Perhaps can restate as: whose name was not released.
As sad as this is, we have a right to end our life as we see fit.
One could do it at home, negating having strangers finding your dead body and reading about it in the media.
And, how come the police know he is 51 years old, on the nose, but don’t know who he is?
The problem is that many if not most times suicide is not a response to a permanent life issue such as terminal cancer or extreme disability but rather a response to depression which according to medical science is typically self limiting. Depression is also amenable to a variety of treatments. So while I agree in principle with @zeus I think it is short sighted to condone impulsive suicide because a large number of people who think suicide is the answer in the dark of a lonely night feel life is worth living the next day. I perceive a lack of empathy in the position that “it’s your life, whatever”. Suicide not only destroys an individual’s life it can destroy the lives of those left behind with unanswered questions. As a society we lose as many people to suicide as we do to murder and yet it is rarely discussed. We need to be better than that as a species.
You do not have a right to end your life…. come on wake up. Jesus is God.. he does not want anyone to do that.
You are kidding, of course. Right?
You may not have that right, but others who do not go by your ways of feelings do have it, regardless of Jesus being God, or not.
As well, I thought Jesus is the son of God, not THE God himself.
But, I do hope you wrote in jest.
it did not say they do not know he he is. it says he was not identified. meaning they are not releasing his name just yet. they dont do that till next of kin is notified if they can do it
