An 18-year-old man was shot three times in the back on a basketball court at the Amsterdam Houses at 64th Street and Amsterdam on Thursday night around 11:30 p.m. The man was taken to Mount Sinai West hospital (formerly Roosevelt) and was not expected to die, police said.
It’s not clear what precipitated the shooting, and police continue to investigate, an NYPD spokesman said.
The Daily News reported that the man was shot “as he shot hoops.” But a resident told the Post that the man was shot just outside the courts. “It was all back to back, five shots…he got shot right by the benches, just outside the basketball courts,” said resident Francois Kent, 49. The Post says police were looking for three men in white shirts “who fled the scene going West on 64th towards Amsterdam.”
Where exactly did this happen?
64th and amsterdam
It happened across the street from the “new” PS 452! Can’t wait to send my kids there next year!
Wow, that didn’t take long. I hope the victim recovers fully and quickly. Best wishes to him/her and the family.
Your elementary school kids shouldn’t be on the basketball courts at 11 PM on a school night.
Perhaps not, but is that going to make anyone feel safer? “It’s fine, the shootings only happen after 11 pm. If you’re out that late you’re just asking for and deserve it.”
Nor should people be getting shot at 11pm at night (or any other time for that matter)
Thats right, its ok to shoot someone if it’s past 10:00 PM these days here on the UWS.
I hope this young man heals swiftly. When’s the last time (or times) that there was gun violence at Amsterdam Houses?
has our current Mayor said one word since taking office about gun control and making an effort to get more guns off the streets ?
Yes Arlene, except that he’s more interested in taking guns from our cops than from our criminals.
It’s okay, they don’t need guns. They can still enforce “proactive” policing and kill people by choking them to death like Daniel Pantaleo did to Eric Garner.
of course he has spoken again and again on gun violence and has numerous initiatives.
https://www.nytimes.com/2016/01/12/nyregion/de-blasio-to-announce-new-system-dedicated-to-addressing-gun-crime-in-new-york-city.html
oh, i thought de blasio claims there is NO gun violence? his kinder/softer approach with the criminals will make them less likely to shoot and the police less likely to classify any shootings as shootings..
Fact check: It isn’t possible to go West toward Amsterdam
Yes, you can if you are on 64th, which is where the shooting took place. They then “headed West toward Amsterdam” which is heading west.
No you can’t – the Amsterdam Houses and the basketball court are already west of Amsterdam Avenue. In order to go west towards Amsterdam, you’d have to be standing within Lincoln Center.
Um, it only possible to go West towards Amsterdam if you are standing INSIDE the Performing Arts Library. You can only go East towards Amsterdam from the Projects…
I’m looking out my 7th floor window at those projects right now from near 57th Street. Directly across the avenue are two super luxury Glenwood towers that went up over the past three years. Every picture tells a story and there’s New York in a snapshot (or a least one aspect of the City).
You may be interested in checking out the HBO documentary ‘Class Divide’ which shows what’s happening in West Chelsea. I came across it while I was looking for another documentary: https://www.hbo.com/documentaries/class-divide/video/promo
The court is part of a playground in the middle of the block bounded by Amsterdam, WEA, 63rd and 64th, a bit closer to 64th than 63rd.
Amsterdam Ave does not go as far as 64th
street?
Hope for a speedy recovery for the young man.
Wondered what was going on when I heard so many police cars going down Columbus Avenue with sirens on just around this time last night. Whatever happened to peace, love and understanding?? So much rage and anger and violence towards each other.
This should give confidence to the rezoning effort . . .
This sad shooting likely will somehow be re-classified to fit the spin about how crime and shootings are down. hopefully the young man recovers quickly.
Yeah a police car went down my street at about 60 miles an hour with sirens blazing last night. So weird that they were driving AWAY from the shooting site.
@Oddity keep your anti-cop conspiracy theories to yourself and the friends you see when you wear your tinfoil hat.
Re: “So weird that they were driving AWAY from the shooting site.”
Well, of course! Who would go towards a shooting !?!?
Oh, wait a sec’…NYPD officers would, because they would be doing what they signed on to do…protecting the rest of us.
CF. those two NYPD officers who thinking someone had tossed a bomb into their vehicle, RISKED THEIR PERSONAL SAFETY TO DRIVE FAR FROM CROWDED TIMES SQUARE TO LESSEN THE DANGER TO OTHERS.
I was there and heard the shots from the corner of 64th and West End Ave. The shots sounded like they came from down 64th st (between West End and Amsterdam). There is a bball court on that block (south side of 64th). My guess is it happened on the street or sidewalk north of the court.
Gun violence there last year. I used to walk through there as a shortcut from West End to Amsterdam, but stopped after last year’s shooting.
It is 3 blocks (essentially) from the new ps 452 and ONLY 6 blocks from PS 199! and even closer to the CURRENT ps 199 zone line (1 block)
Not near ps 199. nooooooo!
Well, I guess there is no where to send our children now….
3 blocks? its across the street from the new 452. Feel bad for those parents who are being forced to send their kids to this new school location.
Actually it is not. Perhaps in your fearful world, 64th street is across from 61st. However, this basketball court in on 64th. Directly across from laguardia hs , one of the most desirable schools in city. Yes, 452 is across from those projects. But, you are assuming that if a crime occurs near or in housing projects, then whole project is super dangerous. Ps 333 near housing projects. Plenty of schools in Chelsea or even ues are near projects are are great schools.
If a crime occurred near a luxury building, would you then be worried then too.
I would be worried if a crime was committed a block from where my child goes to school whether its the projects or a luxury building.
When there was an armed robbery on 71st one block from ps 199, I did not hear a single parent say they shouldn’t have to send their kid to 199
I think a lot of posters are missing the point here. The problem is that an 18 year old who lives in the projects was shot, which has nothing to do with where your children are going to school. Across the street, or a few blocks away, but their lives are a world apart. https://www.hbo.com/documentaries/class-divide/video/promo
I hope WSR will be able to post an update on this event.
I like this snippet from the Daily News:
“Newsome has 17 prior arrests, including one in March for gun possession in Brownsville. He has also been arrested for selling pot and robbery.”
Illegal gun possession is supposed to be 3 years in prison, mandatory. I’d love to know the particulars of why he’s on the street. Ironically, being in prison would have been safer for him.
Because “arrests” doesn’t mean “convictions”.
In the absence of a conviction, the reason he was “on the street” is that he was never convicted of a crime — and is therefore presumed innocent.
More likely it was pled down to menacing or something else by the prosecutor. Happens every day. This is why that rapist was prowling Central Park and assaulting women. He got a sweet plea deal too.
Again, as one stated in a previous thread; the trend has been to mention previous arrests in media releases. This as opposed to merely convictions if they are mentioned at all.
Thanks to various online public record data sources it is very easy to look-up arrest records. While convictions may or may not show up with a routine search.
The public relations/media department of NYPD knows exactly what they are doing when giving out prior arrest history. They will also give out any other information such as employer if it is recorded at time of arrest.
I live in the buildings next door on W64th between Amsterdam and West End. The last time we had a shooting on this street was about the same exact time last year. Suspects were outside of this community.
Word has it that the young man who was shot wasn’t a resident of Amsterdam Houses. Until the investigation is completed, we should not affix this incident to what has been an otherwise peaceful environment.
