Tom’s Restaurant, local American coffee shop of Seinfeld fame, 2880 Broadway (112th). Actually, John the manager reminded us that only the outside corner and sign were used on Seinfeld, which was filmed in a studio. Tom’s is open for pickup and delivery (use UberEats and Doordash) or call (212) 864-6137. ”Business is not good,” John said, ruefully. “Columbia University is out. I hope this virus goes away, so we can all live free.”
Indian Tanpura, classic lineup of curries, rice & grilled meats, 564 Amsterdam (87th). Tipster Karen La Rosa wrote, “This place is a favorite haunt of Mark Ruffalo and other West Side names. Alec Baldwin was a regular when he lived nearby. A hopping place with terrific food. The Makhni is fabulous.” Open for pickup and delivery (212) 721-8700.
Edgar’s, “A magical coffee shop with great food and desserts,” 650 Amsterdam Avenue (92nd). “We are open 10 am – 8 pm every day for take out and delivery. Give us a call! (212) 595-6261 or email edgarscafe.com”
Cafe Fiorello, thin-crust pizzas & classic Italian mains, an institution across the street from Lincoln Center, 1900 Broadway (63rd-64th). General Manager Michael Vitanza wrote to tell us “Café Fiorello reopened on June 1st for delivery and take-out between the hours of 12PM and 9PM. We will have a bartender at the ready and you will see café tables set outside to remind us of what normal used to look like. Guests can call to place orders (212) 595-5330 or use our website, Grubhub, Seamless Web, or Caviar.”
Plowshares Coffee Roasters, fine specialty coffees, 2730 Broadway (104th) “UWS…We’re on our way back! We are reopening our Broadway Store, Wednesday-Sundays (closed Mon/Tues for now) 8AM-3PM. To keep our employees and you safe, we are only accepting orders placed online for pickup at the door. Please be patient as we work out the new service kinks. We will slowly bring back our bakery items as our partners bring their businesses back online and we are excited to offer you some new surprises. Thank you for your incredible support and patience the past few months! We love you.
“You know the drill, please wear a mask and practice social distancing outside the shop.”
Mama’s Pizza at 86th St. has reopened.
We love their pizza, and they make great egg sandwiches for breakfast, too!

Hopefully Mama’s used this temporary shutdown to clean the store. Place was dark and sticky. But yes, good pizza.
Agreed. Mama’s had great food and the staff was always very pleasant, though it sometimes served as a rollover shelter for the building it is in so it is always best to get in and get out. Welcome back – looking forward to having your great pizza!
If the Lincoln Center Plaza can be adapted for outdoor dining, then all the restaurants around that area, inclusive of Fiorello, should be reopening and lobbying like hell to make it happen.
I love the idea, but it’s a long walk across Broadway from their kitchen to the plaza. Temporary outdoor kitchens on the plaza for all the restaurants? Sounds difficult
Everything is difficult. So. Just give up on the neighborhood?
If you read the comments on the West Side Rag, it’s clear what will be left of the UWS in the years to come. Streets without cars, bicycles everywhere going every which way, dogs off leash running amok, dirty sidewalks, shuttered restaurants, stores, bars, Lincoln Center, theaters, comedy clubs.
Have fun. Ba bye.
Happy to see you go, Outta Here.
Although it was distressing that so many restaurants and businesses were closed, it was also an absolute delight that there was so little traffic on the street from mid-March through mid-May. My god, I could sit on a bench in the Broadway median, breath clean air, and hear the birds sing.
But by mid May, it was getting back to the same-old same-old with dirty air and the only sounds mostly being the traffic rushing by.
I hope the city figures out a way to allow restaurants to set up more outside distanced dining using the parking lane. But that issue has been in the air for weeks and there’s been no sign that the mayor et al. have any plans to allow for it. No surprise since the mayor seems to have very little imagination when it comes to coping with the changes necessary for living outside the bubble of his chauffeur-driven SUV.
Or … we could have orderly bicycle traffic with limited car traffic, open spaces, better clean-up (in response to the disease prevention efforts), and fewer angry people?
You forgot infinite scaffolding and homeless encampments.
I miss the pancakes at Fiorello.
I look forward to their opening outdoor dining so I can get my fix!
Does anyone know where I can find the info for a block association that includes west 72nd street? The closest that I could find was 64-67. Thank you.

Oxbow Tavern reportedly permanently closed and on the market.
I also heard that Olive & Bette is closing all of their stores, including the one on Columbus Ave.
That pricelessly picturesque/iconic/last of its kind exemplar of the classic neighborhood coffee shop/diner BROADWAY RESTAURANT has reopened at 102nd and Broadway for pick up and delivery. They are the real real deal (!) and deserve your patronage, especially since they’d just come back from a recent fire that had shut them down for a number of months!
I just tried to order food from 3 different places and they were all closed. I wonder if the curfew has made them decide it’s not worth coming in to open their restaurants. 🙁
Could also be they are supporting Blackout Tuesday…
Yes, it could be for that too, I’m losing track of the days! They were all so happy about being up and running again.
Ya think?
Broadway Restaurant has also reopened at 2664 Broadway. Help support this long time neighborhood gem! They are open until 5:30pm
Born and raised here. We’ve risen time and time again. We’re going to be fine. It will take time and it will be very different.
Himalayan Curry House on 108/Broadway has reopened. Best Chicken Tikka in town!
