From steak battles to a diner documentary, Upper West Side restaurants have been making news lately.
Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group has issued a cease and desist letter to the new Lincoln Square Steak restaurant on 70th street, claiming that its logo is too similar to theirs. Lincoln Square opens this week. Don Evans, a consultant for the steakhouse, told the Post that “We are not going to change anything.”
“I pointed out that their logo is red and white and ours is red and black, that Union Square Café is a downtown spot with a New American menu featuring one steak, and Lincoln Square is on the Upper West Side with nine different types of steak.” Image via Daily Meal.
La Caridad, the Cuban-Chinese joint on 78th and Broadway, has been closed for a week due to a gas issue. The restaurant has been intent on showing its patrons that the temporary closure is not a serious problem, even posting a notice from Con Edison on its window. Thanks to Susan for the photo.
Sushi Shop, the new sushi restaurant that we’ve been writing about on Broadway and 77th, opens this week.
“The Upper West Side location, at 2191 Broadway between 77th and 78th streets, opens this week in a 1,500-square-foot spot with 25 seats…Grab-and-go lunch combos range from $12.95 to $14.95, while take-out or dine-in dinner options include a luxury “black box” of 56 pieces of sushi for $79.95. Sushi Shop, founded by Gregory Marciano in 1998 with a single eatery in Paris, has grown to 109 locations in countries including Italy, Spain, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Germany, the UK and Dubai.”
Awadh, on Broadway and 98th, got a nice write-up in the New Yorker. “It’s fun to eat like a Nawab, amid the Upper West Siders complaining that the print on the Times’ Web site is too small, discussing “Breaking Bad” and “High Maintenance.” The hardworking waitstaff are quietly patient and nearly telepathic with their courtesies. At the end of such an extravagant meal, it’s hard not to feel as if one has imbibed a pound of melted butter and a quart of cream.” Thanks to Paul for the tip.
The documentary about Tom’s Restaurant on 112th and Broadway (made famous by Suzanne Vega and Seinfeld) is now available for rent or purchase on Vimeo. We showed a clip here.
Really Danny? give me a break.
I heard you want to bar them from using the word “square” too.
Get over yourself!
I am a fan of your restaurants, but you seem to have a real mean streak.
First the Op Ed about commercial rent controls which is ridiculous. The truth is you had a long term severely under market lease for Union Square Cafe and couldn’t come to terms with the landlord to extend. So because you had a problem , the whole City should change? I think not.
OH and the same City let you open its public park a place called Shake Shack , you know, the ones who’s IPO is about to make you a Billionaire (or close). BTW, Shake Shack was the name of a place when I was a kid- they should sue you!
A little off topic, I always smile when I see decades-old, funky independent health food stores that are called Whole Foods. They had the name first, ahead of the Texas conglomerate, they usually get to keep it!
Hope Caridad is back open soon.
Hey Danny, the Red Cross has a similar logo too…
hmm… i dunno. A famous “square” restaurant with its name spelled out in a vertical logo, set against a red square. And a new, unrelated “square” restaurant with its name spelled out in a vertical logo, set against a red square. Intentional or not, maybe the new place should tweak its logo.
Mr Meyer should calm himself down and perhaps get an eye exam. Kind of mean. Does Myer have designs on the Upper West Side restaurant world? If so, he should play fair and bring it! And if he would never consider a venture (other than burgers and dogs) in the nab he should leave us alone.
Thanks Webot for giving a little background on Mr Meyer.
