Some people like salad, some like steak. All will be satisfied with this edition of Upper West Side openings and closings (who are we kidding, all are never satisfied!).
Just Salad, which sells slightly more than “just salad”, opened on Broadway between 70th and 71st, in the former home of Yapple yogurt. We received several excited emails about this development, including one that said “PRAISE BE! The UWS finally has it’s own chopped salad emporium!” Thanks to Lisa and Andrew for the tips.
Cafe Ronda, the South American restaurant on Columbus between 71st and 72nd street, has closed its doors after 12 years. Cafe Ronda served tapas and food from around South America and Spain. The message on its answering machine says “we will be reopening soon with a new concept.” The owners also run Cafe Frida and other restaurants. Thanks to Roger, Mary and Timothy for the tips.
Locksmith & Hardware on 72nd street between West End and Broadway is closing with a liquidation sale, now offering 20% off. Thanks to Linda for the tip.
C. Wonder, the clothing, accessories and home goods store in the Time Warner Center, will close in the next few weeks, Buzzfeed reported. “C. Wonder’s 11 U.S. stores, already pared down from a massive round of closings in recent months, will shutter completely in the next two to three weeks, while its website is slated to shut down by the end of next week, the person at the meeting said.” It just opened two and a half years ago. Thanks to Andrew for the tip.
Lincoln Square Steak is set to open to the public on January 14, after special preview meals on the 12th and 13th to benefit City Meals on Wheels. It’s located on 70th street just off of Amsterdam in the former home of Loi. The community board says the site’s liquor license is contingent on them keeping the noise level low, as parties in that space have upset neighbors in the past. The entrance is quite striking, don’t you think? Thanks to Mike, Steve, Priscilla and others for tips. And thanks to Steve for the photo above.
Someone also sent us a photo of a new drugstore that’s opening, but now I can’t find the email. If you’re out there, please send again!
Please keep sending tips! (if we forgot to acknowledge your tip here, email us a reminder.)
Yes, indeed, the entrance to Lincoln Square Steak is quite striking… WHERE IS IT???
(Yes, I know it’s on 70th St., but not everybody does!)
Good catch, we’ll add that! WSR
What???? no new drug store openings, no banks, no Starbucks….a Salad Bar? Just what I want on day when its 8 degrees…SALAD. Jeeeeze Louise!
They have soup too
Any word on when Bareburger is opening on Columbus Ave?
Love Bareburger! Where is it rumored to be opening?
They say they are “in the process of getting permits, construction and the logistics but it will open.” WSR
A worker at Ronda said it’s re-opening in 3 weeks as a different concept (same owner), called Ella I think.
Also looks like Dry Bar on 71st plans to open on Thursday.
Has Chico Julio on Amsterdam closed? They aren’t on Seamless or Open Table anymore.
Just drove by Chico Julio in a cab the other night and noticed the gate was down. What keeps happening in that spot?! I enjoyed it there (as I did when it was Cafe Frida). Loved the back garden.
what’s going on in the playground at 67th Street in Central Park? Crews seem to be working on destroying the existing playground.
Per DNAinfo.com:
Adventure Playground
While work on this playground was supposed to start this past summer, it actually began in December 2014. Adventure Playground and Wild West Playground, both on the West Side of Central Park, are together receiving $5 million in upgrades, funded by private donations to the Central Park Conservancy. The work is part of a larger plan to renovate all of the park’s playgrounds. The playground will become more accessible, gain new play features and upgrades to its landscaping and pathways. The work will last about five months, during which time the space will be closed.
Menus are posted for Lincoln Square Steak. Very traditional food-wise. Drink list is more modern and also quite large.

My wife and I went to Just Salad yesterday. The salads are fresh but it is expensive. Two salads and two waters for $25.
Two waters? Why are you buying bottled water when we have the best drinking water in the world. Ask for a cup from the tap!
Just saved you 4 bucks.
Must be a lot of lazy persons with money to burn if they can’t buy salad ingredients and then make salads at home. That’s one retailer I’ll never visit.
I wish Lincoln Square Steak good luck. That location has a long history of restaurant failures while adjacent Cafe Luxembourg has flourished for many years. If the steak place is just as expensive as midtown steak places, I wonder how it will do on the UWS on a street that doesn’t get a lot of traffic except when the nearby school is in session. Maybe it will have a kids steak menu!
I just want to respond to that comment about lazy people paying $11 for a salad. First of all when you are out and about and you are starving, this is a healthy and fabulous option!
Second of all, if I was to make a salad with as many ingredients, it would most definitely coast me more then $11!! Furthermore, if I don’t want a salad again in the next couple of days, those of us that have limited room in our refrigerator’s will have to throw out the remains of the ingredients.
Enjoy your Big Mac!
Peace out.
Absolutely Suzanne! Couldn’t agree with you more! 🙂
I am one of those lazy people who is happy to spend $12 on a large salad. I’d much rather save myself from the time/annoyance of having to buy lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, eggs, chicken, and dressing. Then I’d have to hard boil the eggs and cook the chicken. No thanks, here’s my $12.
Lincoln Square Steak appears to have a burger that’s 12 ounces (!) and costs $28. That is pretty ridiculous.
Not if you split it 3 ways hahahaha
Where do you send tips? I don’t see anywhere to add pictures in these comments. Thanks!
Tips and photos can be sent to info@westsiderag.com. Thanks! WSR
Damn. Locksmith & Hardware was the only place in the neighborhood that would sharpen kitchen knives for you.
Zabar’s does free knife sharpening too (upstairs), Saturdays, but I not sure of the hours. Give them a call!
Gracious home sharpens knives and is fairly priced (believe it or not)
$1 per inch
There is also a knife sharpening truck on Columbus and 73 on Saturday mornings
